Distal impacted wisdom tooth

So I've been having issues with a lower wisdom tooth that is distally impacted. It's about 60-70% through the gum and growing up fairly straight but the x ray shows part of the tooth below the gum is tilted towards the back of the mouth. Have had three episodes of pericoronitis in about 6 months so referred to oral surgeons to have out. Tooth is also touching the nerve just to complicate matters. Just wondering has anyone else had this type of impaction and how they found extraction? I'm extremely dental phobic so any reassurance would be greatly appreciated

I have similar issues with my wisdom tooth and to make matter worse my tooth is at an angle. Because of the nerve issue I am reluctant to get the tooth removed and my dentist has also warned that it might cause further problems.
Recently I have bought a water flosser. That has hugely helped. I have not had a single episode of inflammation ever since. May be look into that.
Also please go ahead with the referral. Oral surgeon are usually quite experienced. May be your nerve is not as near as your dentist is saying and it might not be a problem at all from surgeon' point of view.

Thanks very much for the reply @Literallyfedup. I actually ha e a water flosser but have always been a little wary about using it. I'll definitely give it a go though if you find it helped. I had a 3d scan done and it showed that roots are brushing against the nerve but not sure how problematic that actually is.

If it’s 60/70% erupted (through the gum) then the extraction should be straightforward in the hands of an oral surgeon. You can request sedation for the procedure if you wish, if you are phobic.

I had one removed until local anaesthetic about 2 years ago that was the same as you - had erupted but brushing the nerve. Took about 3 mins for the surgeon to get it out - DH hadn't even managed to get back to the car before I was out.

I'm terrified of dentists due to a very shoddy dentist as a child so I sympathize but it was much easiest than I anticipated!! I had no real pain after, took paracetamol and was fine the next day.

Having another one out next week although this one is under a general and hasn't actually come through but causing problems - not looking forward to that one!!!

Hey @DottyWott yes I definitely think I'd need IV sedation for it. Had to have gas and air a couple of weeks ago for a routine extraction.....was glad I did as the tooth broke during the procedure.
@smileyplant ah thats reassuring to know that yours wasn't too bad. You must have had a great surgeon! Oh I hope it all goes well for you next weekFlowers Do you mind me asking why it's being done under a GA instead of sedation? I would love to get mine out under GA but apparently with the sedation you don't remember anything so I hope think I would be ok with that. It's more the aftermath I'm fretting about.

I had this. I paid to go privately so dentist/maxofacial surgeon could really get it out. I was worried I'd fight and it was just be too traumatic. I got scared about the fact the toothed was so close to the nerve and didn't want to lose the feeling of my tongue!

smileyplant · 18/01/2021 15:11

@TeddyBearsPickAndMix thank you - it was such a relief to get it out stop the infections! he was great! it's not come through the Gum yet so might take a while to get out. So they suggested a GA instead this time just in case.

TeddyBearsPickAndMix · 18/01/2021 15:15

@Hirewiredays I definitely understand paying that bit extra for the reassurance. How much did it cost with the maxfax surgeon? I think my surgeon charges about £130 for wisdom teeth. Sedation is extra but well worth it.

Ah that makes sense @smileyplant. They probably just don't want you getting tired/distressed if they think it might take a while. My surgeon has estimated it'll take about 20mins to get mine out which isn't terribly long but due to my phobia she recommends the IV for it.

I went private at Bupa. It was about 16 years ago. It was the same price for one or four teeth so I just went for all four. Best money I ever paid.

I've just had all my wisdom teeth out In SW London. I was terrified about the nerve thing and the surgeon said she had never had anyone have long nerve damage which I thought were good odds.

I used my insurance but payg I would imagine are at least 1k (anesthatist is £200 alone) I can pm you the name if you like

I had two severely impacted wisdom teeth removed because they were painful 24/7 and it was unbearable. They were growing into the back of my mouth horizontally. Lots of fun!

The extraction was simple. I got it done under a local anaesthetic so I could go home straight after, and with some painkillers and soft food I was fine in a few weeks. I didn’t feel a thing during the extraction - other than the injections of anaesthetic of course. You'll feel much better without the tooth though - trust me!

Haha yes! My dad took me to the hospital and he hadn't even finished the magazine in the waiting room by the time I came back through Grin
