DD is 2. Itchy bum and vagina. might have started with bum a few days ago but not sure. def worse at night. red vagina, anus not sure as she fell asleep before I could check properly. no discharge.

Does not hurt when she wees. Does when I touch it. DD wingy and weepy for the past few days, more than normal. potty trained for the last few weeks.

Do I need to go to GP or can I get medicine for threadworms or whatever pharmacist thinks it might be?

TIA

You need to check at night to be sure, or check the faeces.

The female worms come out at night to lay eggs, you will be able to see them, use a torch!

They are around 1 mm in thickness, and 1-2cm in length. White and wiggly!

You can get the tablets from the pharmacist, make sure you treat all the family and use the follow up does as well

should I go to pharmacy today just in case or wait to check at night (l'll let DH do this bit as I might faint if I see one).

next question: what happens if I get them while pg?

are these the ones you get from animals?

I would get the tablets, but then wait and check: sounds wormlike, if worse at night, but dd1 had itchy and sore vagina a few weeks after starting potty training and I'm now pretty sure it wasn't threadworms at all, but a sort of eczema-y, irritated by pee/poo/wipes-y thing.

Personally, I treated for worms (all of us) anyway, just in case - but then again, I'm squeamish.

And I was pregnant at the time: you can either use strict hygiene method alone, whereupon in theory the worms should die out after six weeks naturally, or (as I said, I'm squeamish, so I did) you can ask your GP or OB if you can take the Piperazine version of Pripsen.

Not sure about animals, leave that one to someone else

Hope dd is feeling better soon - sounds upsetting for her!

These are not tape worms that you get from eating meat or fish, those are very big and thread worms are quite small.

You'd have to tell the phramcist if you are pregnant or breast feeding, as I'm not sure if you can take the tablets in those situations.

You also beed to trim fingernails, wear pants under night things, and shower in the mornings to get rid of the eggs before they can re-infest. Damp dusting is also helpful as it helps to get rid on the eggs, which are microscopic.

thank you both. I've send dh to the pharamcist. will call him now to ask for smthing for me just in case as in re to worms I am very very squeamish, in fact I loath them in every shape or form.

i thought all this itching was nceause of toilet training, wearing knickers, being fussy etc. but when we had bath today DD cried when I was washing her bits. also DB, which is external to all, commented on how DD was a lot more winging in the last couple of days, and she always is when smthng not right.

I did not mean tape worm but if I need to give worm tablet to dog and cat. is it from them she might have got it, or from kids.

I think more likely kids, Pippi - though my sister said her cats used to get threadworm, I'm not sure they're the same kind or whether they can live on/in humans. But your dh could ask the pharmacist

Chemist won't give you anything OTC if you say you're pregnant, probably. Its usually 'at doctor's discretion' - though my dh got Pripsen with piperazine, NOT mebendazole OTC having had the OK from my OB when I was about 7 months pg. If you're within the first 3 months, I'm not sure you can even take that - do, do check first.

I would take her to GP tomorrow if you don't spot worms tonight, because my GP said its very common for little girls especially to get infections when first potty training - she might need a bit of Canesten or something. Good luck with the Torch Thang, I've done it with shaking hands several times, and never seen a worm yet - dread the day I do!

elibean just called dh who was speaking to chemist who said he does not think is threadworm. god know what he thinks it is but I bet he's going to say 'take her to gp'!!! which means l'll have to take another day off and will soon be jobless. nice

oh update. chemist says to give her the same cream we got for impetigo (????????). and that little girl under 16 rarely get thrush. is that so??? sounds a bit suspicious.

Hmm, not sure about that - GP thought bit of fungal infection was quite common, though he didnt' say 'thrush'. Let us know what GP says!
