Chickenpox? Help needed please..

I think my dd (3) has chickenpox. Noticed a blister like spot under her arm on Thursday night and she has three more on her back and one in between her fingers this morning. (That was at the last check!)

She has also had a temp and a bit of a cough.

What do I do? Off to the chemist shortly to try and get her something.
How do I know they are definately chicken pox? Should I expect loads more over the next few days?

I also have a baby of 4 months, I guess it is inevitable that she will get them? When is it likely that she will show symptoms?

Any tips will be greatly appreciated

They say its "3 days coming, 3 days staying and 3 days going".

No idea if that is what it is with yours, but DD had the odd blister type spot for a few days before it broke out entirely.

Get piriton syrup to help with the itching/scratching, and Eurax cream/lotion (far better than calamine lotion).

They don't always get loads of spots. My DS2 had about 10. You don't need to bathe them if they are not particularly itchy.

Expect about 2 weeks for your DD to come out with it.

Give her calpol for fever and piriton (liquid) for itching. Calamine & Glycerin Cream (I bought some in Boots) good for applying to skin, especially between legs (ouch!). My 8 week old (at the time) got it even though I was breast feeding (was told she might not). However she only got about 5 spots and it didn't really seem to bother her and she is now immune, allegedly. DS got it first and had the most spots and high fever, DD1 had fewer spots but diahorrea for about a week.

For bath time, get a hnadful of porridge oats and wrap them in a muslin (secured with rubber band or hair tie). Let that sit in the bath water and then squeeze the gunk out. It very soothing and good for the skin.
Also, you could add a tablespoom of bicarb of soda, which also can relieve itchiness.
Lanacaine mentol talc also helped dd and particularly ds once the spots were crusting.
DD had about 50 spots i'd say (she was 4). DS was about 18months and had hundreds.

Second all the above advice, would like to add that keeping your E45 cream in the fridge makes it wonderfully cooling to put on the itchy spots. Be prepared for a really high temp at the beginning .

Good luck

Thank you everyone for all your advice

Just popped to the local pharmacy and he gave me piriton syrup and calamine cream. I also bought some bicarbonate of soda and I have porridge oats so here goes!

She had quite a high temp last night but doesn't feel too bad today. I think the worse is yet to come but am hoping she is one of the lucky ones and doesn't get hundreds of spots. I was a good few years older than dd when I got it and was left with quite a few scars from scratching.

I suppose it's best to get it out of the way while they are still young.

Do I have to keep her indoors? She wanted to come to the pharmacy with me but didn't want to risk spreading it to other kids.

DD2 (4mths) has had wee bout of diahorrea the past day or so, could this be a sign that she is in the early stages?

Just wanted to second the porridge oats idea - it worked brilliantly for dd2. You can also get Calomine in aqueous cream which is easier to apply that calomine lotion.

I think its best to keep them in until the spots scab over - we had to wait in a private room when I took dd to the gps.

Thanks, I think we will stay in, I would feel terrible if we passed it on to anyone. Got the cream so will give it a go!

Blimey we are not used to being stuck in at all! This is now day three of having the pox and she still has more every time I look.

I feel so sorry for her as she is very uncomfortable, mainly with the ones on her hands at the moment. This morning she woke up with them in her ear on her face and on her bottom. They are still very much at the blister stage so she has not been itching too much yet though she has had the odd dose of piriton.

I can't believe how patient she is being when applying the cream, she is a wee star.

I just wish I could suffer it for her

Baby showing no signs as yet though she still has a slightly upset stomach

Thanks Dior, I've got the cream as I found the lotion very messy and drying.

Doesn anyone know when I can expect her to stop getting new spots? (This is day three)
