Does anyone's child wear contact lenses?

DS is 12, and he's started playing rugby at school. I've always tried to put him off it before, mainly because I know someone who was paralysed from the neck down due to a rugby accident. However, he's really enjoying it, so I have to put my fears to one side and encourage him, although my heart is in my mouth when I go to watch.

He is very short-sighted and wears glasses, but, a year or so ago, the optician suggested contact lenses for sport. At the time, it wasn't an issue - golf and fishing being last year's sports of choice! - but now I'd like him to at least be able to see who's about to land on top of him! I took him to another optician, and she said that lenses weren't recommended fo children under 14. I think this was more to do with hygiene issues, rather than the eyes, IYSWIM.

I would buy daily disposables, and he'd wear them once or twice a week, for half a day each time.

Does anyone else's children wear lenses, and has it been problem free?
Thanks

I dont know any children than wear them, but I do, and the only thing I can say is, you have to want to wear them, as they take some getting used to, if your hearts not in it, you will never get the nack of putting them in, taking them out, and wearing them for long enough periods to get used to the feel of them.

I've worn them since I was 13 and at that time they were yearly ones which you had to clean v. carefully. I am now 32 and still have healthy eyes and I really wear contact lenses as in never have a day off, wear them from moment I get up to going to bed.

These days with dailies he can wear them as and when needed as you say so I can't really see it being a problem..

Thanks. We went to the optician's on Saturday, so he has some dailies to practise putting in and taking out. So far, so good.

I sterted wearing gas permiable lenses at aroubd 14, and like wheely bug i wear them all day, every day.

DS1 used daily disposables like this from about this age with no problems at all - 30 dailies would last him about 3 months with all the training/matches. He is 19 now and uses monthlies.

DS2 would have but has very dry eyes and can't (he is v disappointed!)

GrumpyWomenRuleOK · 28/10/2007 21:16

Yes, ds1 has used dailies since 12 and is now 16 - used to be only for sport but now girls are around he is costing me a fortune, so optician is going to give him same as me - extended wear lenses that you replace every fortnight but don't wear at night - they are the thinnest and most permeable option apparently.

I first got lenses when I was 13 - they were massive clonky old-fashioned hard ones (this was in 1977) but they changed my life! I wore lenses until I was in my early 30s but then my eyes got too dry and I gave them up. But at least it meant I didn't have to deal with my awkward teenage years as a speccy four eyes.
