Any ideas what this could be?

Over the last few days my 17yr old son noticed a red area on his finger, it has got bigger but not quickly, it's not hot, it's hard and only uncomfortable when pressed. It's on both sides of one finger and another area further down. Yesterday he noticed a small red area on his other hand and today a red are on his big toe. Any ideas?

Insect bites? Do you have any pets?

I'd take/send him to the chemist for a pharmacist to have a look.

My son had those. I can’t remember the name, but using head and shoulders as shower gel sorted it out

Covid sometimes causes symtoms like this.

Somebodyotherthanme · 09/01/2021 13:21

Possibly ringworm in its early stage, before it becomes more ring like in appearance?

Tryingtryingandtrying · 09/01/2021 13:22

I'm aware that could look like I'm kidding. I'm not, look up Covid toes. (and fingers)

Chilblains also look like this. Has he been getting cold hands, (eg working outside) then coming into somewhere warm ?

AfterSchoolWorry · 09/01/2021 13:57

Hand, foot and mouth?

Glenorma · 09/01/2021 13:59

Covid fingers and toes? Or chilblains from the cold?

heatered · 09/01/2021 15:25

I've looked up chilblains because he does feel the cold more than us but it doesn't fit as they aren't itching or burning. Not sure about Covid, they don't look like any of the photos I've seen. I've considered ringworm because they are circular but I can't see the white area. Thanks for the suggestions

So this is what it looks like now. Still no pain, no heat and no itching.

I contact the nurse practitioner who was undecided about cellulitis because of the red patch also on his toe. So she consulted the doctor and they are agreeable with a diagnosis of chilblains. Because of Covid (pre lockdown) he has spent hours out walking the streets with his girlfriend. He is very skinny so he does feel the cold. I'm still a little unsure if chilblains are right because they are supposed to be painful and itchy even the nurse said that, anyone with experience of non painful chilblains?

Any ideas what this could be?

I have had some that were sensitive but not painful, and others that were extremely itchy. I was living in a freezing house with no central heating when I first got them, and then had them again when I was working out of doors in a cold Winter.
Are they painful if knocked or pressed ?
