sorry that this is tmi

3 days a go I developed what I assumed as a yeast infection. It was very itchy down there. I bought canesten cream. It did nothing. It has got worse and worse. Yesterday I bought a canesten pessery. It did nothing. Last night I woke up several times because it itched but it also stung.

Today I called GP but there is no way they can fit me in. I am in tears with the stinging pain and itchiness. It looks all red and inflamed. I want to pharmacist who said it could be a bacterial infection and to see GP. I can't.

I have loads of discharge, loads and loands and loands. Some I think it from the pessary. The discharge stings, it feels like acid burning me. Maybe I am allergic to the pessery.

I have rarely been so uncomfortable. Even an episitomy was more bearable that this. What can I do???????

Can you go to the local hospital?

scorpio1 · 26/10/2007 13:25

maybe phone back the GP and say its urgent.

TMI: does it smell funny? it could be BV, in which case the pesaries will irritate it more.

scorpio1 · 26/10/2007 13:26

or GUM part of the hospital?

constancereader · 26/10/2007 13:27

You must get some medical help, phone the doctor and insist. They must have emergency appointments. Otherwise you could try NHS Direct but I bet they tell you to go to the doctor. Sorry can't be of more use.

RubberDuck · 26/10/2007 13:27

Have you got a walk-in centre near you? Alternatively, how about phoning back the GP and asking if you can turn up anyway and sit there until end of surgery on the off chance? (hopefully you'll annoy them so much they'll let you see a doctor just to get rid of you!)

stickyj · 26/10/2007 13:28

Go back and insist on seeing the GP. You might be allergic to the pessary, I think I was 'cos it sounds like what happened to me. Drink gallons of water and keep peeing, I know it hurts. Try a health shop for ideas, but I'd insist on seeing the doctor. You're in pain and it's their job. Cry on the phone and keep asking. Sorry to hear this and I hope someone helps you quickly.

becklespookle · 26/10/2007 13:28

Sounds to me like Thrush. In the past if I have not caught it and treated it quick enough it ends up incredibly painful! I have also sometimes found that the pessary has made it worse and would recommend the oral capsule (as long as you are not pregnant). Takes a day or 2 to work but generally clears it up, keep using the cream to soothe it in the meantime. Definitely try and see the doc if you can though.

fluffyanimal · 26/10/2007 13:28

Have a warm bath in salt water?
Ice pack between the legs?
Go to NHS drop in centre if you have one near by?

Sorry if this isn't much help but I do sympathise - I remember when I had measles my fanjo was intolerably inflamed and it's horrible.

MascaraOHara · 26/10/2007 13:28

Deff. phone GPs back, you can't stay liek that all weekend!

If you can't see one tell the receptionist you need to speak to a doc on the phone at least.

nutcracker · 26/10/2007 13:29

This exact thing happened to me once. I also took canestan oral treatment and used a pessary but nothing changed infact it got worse.

I went and saw the nurse who took a swab and told me to try lanacane (i think, will check), cream as my bits were very swollen and sore.

Anyway, after a few days it just dissapeared, and then the swab came back clear, so I never found out what it was.

The cream did help though.

helphelphelphelp · 26/10/2007 13:29

What is BV? What is GUM? It does not smell particularly.

I could go to A&E but I thought they might laugh at me. Also I am in central London, waits are horrendous and I am alone with my 14 month old LO. She will go crazy waiting in a hospital. I might have to do it though. I can's stand this.

if it is thrush, insert some natural yoghurt in there using a tampon-take tampon out. the coolness soothes and the natural bacteria will fight it.

dirtmonkey · 26/10/2007 13:29

are you at home? for some instant relief can you get in the shower and aim cool water at it? If you are allergic to the pessary this will help wash it away and if the water is cool it might soothe.

If you can get to your GP's surgery easily then go down there in tears, DO NOT explain your symptoms to the receptionist just say you have to see someone now - perhaps a nurse. This is normally a good way in to see the GP as the nurse will just go and get him/her out of their room.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

scorpio1 · 26/10/2007 13:31

BV is Bacterial Vaginosis-a bacterial infection of the vagina. it is caught the same way as thrush-thongs, tight trousers, bubble bath etc. it needs anti-biotics to treat. BV has a very particular smell sometimes, and the discharge is grey.

GUM-GenitoUrinary Medicine-just a fancy name for the part of the hospital that may run a clinic to help you.

nutcracker · 26/10/2007 13:31

Yep it was Lanacane, says it can be used for external vaginal itching.

God the things I post on here.

helphelphelphelp · 26/10/2007 13:32

Just tried GP again and there is no way to get through to a live person until 2.30pm. I tried for the emergency appts this morning but they were all gone. I even cried but to no avail.

I am in the shower every 5 mins. It is the only thing that helps. I will go and buy some yoghurt too.

If only Dh could come and look after LO. He is not home 'til 7pm.

at nutty and the things she posts.

Try drinking lots of fluids, you may be able to flush it through.

helphelphelphelp · 26/10/2007 13:34

DH and I are TTC. My period is due on Sunday. Could this be related to TTC????

Thanks for the Lanacane tip nutcracker.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 26/10/2007 13:34

Def try the lanacane, it does really help honest.

scorpio1 · 26/10/2007 13:35

some women (many i think) get thrush in early pg due to rising hormones. make sure you tell anyone medical that you are ttc (Good luck!)

CantSleepWontSleep · 26/10/2007 13:36

Go to A&E - they often have a children's area which they might let you wait in if you have dd with you, which will keep her entertained.

becklespookle · 26/10/2007 14:00

Could be related to TTC - was the first sign I was pg with both boys and this pg. Also when first pg were the worst cases I had ever had! Obviously if you may be pg then don't take the oral capsule. With this pg I had it really badly and pessary made it far worse. Docs prescribed me a cream called Nystatin (or Nystan) which I had to use internally for 2 weeks - bit yukky but instant relief and it did the job.

helphelphelphelp · 26/10/2007 14:04

Well I suppose it might be a bit easier to bear if it is a sign I am pregnant. Still horrible but there would be a silver lining! Don't feel pregnant though and did not get it with DD. Now I I am off to Boots to but Lanacane and a preg test! Then I am going to try the drop in centre at local hospital. Just waiting for DD to wake up.
