I struggled with breastfeeding him, until eventually we both had enough after 9 months and gave up (I almiost gave yp 76354 rtimes before that) and it took his a few days to get feeding established. However, his weight bgain was genereally ok, so I just thiought it was one of those things, even tyhough I had no probs whatsover with bfing DS1 for 15 months

Anyway, I was playing with him this mormning, and his toungue is just like this

Do I need to see the HV? He is already under a paediatrician for another matter, but we don;t see him until early next year. Will it have implicvatrions with speech development???

Poor lamb is falling to bits, he has a congenital hand deformity and a hernia and now thins

Bless him! Can you give your paediatrician a call?

I will ring the paed, I think. However, it's always a bit like playing roulette getting through to his office. I will ring my HV when she starts work (at 10, the slacker)

Don't feel bad - they aren't necessarily that easy to spot (my husband noticed my son's - I'm not sure I ever would have done!)

In lots of areas they don't do anything about them anyway and just wait and see if it sorts itself out, it may not even cause him any problems if it is not severe.

We had my ds tongue-tie cut when he was a couple of months to avoid any poss. probs later, but his was very severe, if it had been more mild I may have left it...

I'm no expert but it looks to me that your ds can actually stick his tongue out a fair bit so hopefully it's not that bad (he's very cute by the way tongue-tie or not!)

I would talk to your HV about what the policy is in your area..and don't feel bad!

MMSAI goes to check DS's tongue as she has never paid particular attention to how it looks

IntergalacticWarlock · 26/10/2007 09:23

That's not my son in the pic! It's just some random kid of tinternet.

I used it as illustration, as I know DS2 wouldn't sit still long enough with his tongue poking out for a pic.

It's a bit more pronounced than in the picture, but he can still poke his tongue out

I wouldn't do anything. My DS2 has tongue tie, but his speech is fine, and he bf just fine. (He was diagnosed by midwife, doctors, BFC, etc etc.)

NormanBatesFletcher · 26/10/2007 09:28

My DH has a tongue tie, and his speech is fine (a very very slight lisp, people don't really notice it).

ScaryScienceT · 26/10/2007 09:28

DS2 had a tongue tie (no probs feeding though). The GP referred us to an ENT consultant who said that it didn't need any treatment. The tip of the tongue grows beyond the tie.

DS2 didn't speak until he was about 2 (and then clearly and in full sentences straight away). He basically missed the babbling stage.

IntergalacticWarlock · 26/10/2007 09:28

See DS2 didn;t bf very well. I fed him until 9 months, and I was relieved by the end of it. It was alwats bloodyt agony and he would never latch on right, depsite my best efforts

The thing is, how severe a tongue tie is seems somewhat unrelated to whether there will be BF problems. Some obvious tongue ties cause no problems, and some mild ones seem to. It's all quite complicated, probably down to jaw shape, breast shape, etc etc etc.

IntergalacticWarlock · 26/10/2007 09:35

I will mention it to the paed when Isee him next I think. He's stated babbling, but no speech as yet (which I am noy at all concerned about. DS1 didn;t say a single word until he was quite old) so I will see if it causes any probs. The time I see the paed will probably conincide with
that sort od stage anyway
