Hi whimsy, my uncle had a THB two weeks ago, he was home after a week and is progressing well. My FIL has had two THB over the past twenty years, the last one 12 years ago.

Although this is major surgery, I am told that it is very "common" surgery now so try to take some comfort from the fact that lots of people have had this done and gone on to live long healthy lives.

I remember the fear you are feeling now and will be sending good vibes your way for tomorrow. HTH
xx

all the best for your dad tomorrow wish him a speady recovery

I had an uncle who had this operation about 3 times I think from the mid 70's onwards. Very healthy - keen cyclist after bypass. He died when he was in his late 70's about 10 years ago.

Also have another uncle who had one a few years ago. I think in both cases the biggest problem was the effect on the leg they took the veins from.

It is a pretty routine operation now I think. Hope things go well.

My dad had one of these and a valve repair about 10 years ago, the waiting is agonising isn't it? He's fine now, it was the bit before hand and during the operation that was terrifying. I was on teaching practice at the time, I don't think my class quite knew what was wrong with me!!

Dad was home after a week and is still fine and enjoying life.

Best wishes to you and your Dad.

My Mum had one 13 years ago. She took a long time to recover but she's still here and doing very well. I spent the day of the operation doing housework in an obsessive manner - my house has never been so clean since!

Best wishes to your dad for a speedy recovery and many more years of good health.

Thanks for all your kind messages had a really bad night last night couldn't sleep at all. I think they said to him it was quite a routine operation they have said the tricky part is the patch. Was meant to be taking DS to the theatre this morning to see the Wheels on the bus but really cant face it.
Thanks for the support

Thinking of you, whimsy (and your dad of course).

I hope the op is all over by now, Whimsy, and has gone well. A dear friend of ours had this op about 3 yrs ago, when he was 56, and quite honestly, it transformed his life and he looks 10 yrs younger. It does take some weeks to recover and there can sometimes be a period of depression but all in all, it's a life-enhancing operation. Best wishes.

Oh whimsy, my mum had a triple heart bypass in January 2003. It went very well indeed and she made a great recovery. I was looking at a photo taken of her with my new DS3 in August this year and comparing it with a photo of her with DS2 when he was a newborn three years ago, and she looks much better now than in the old pre-op photo. I do hope your dad's op goes as well. Keep us posted.

whimsy · 26/10/2004 18:46

Well, he has had the op apparently they couldn't do a triple because one hole was too small not sure what they meant, the patch went well and they've put a balloon in? He is in a stable condition in ICU and we should be able to visit over the next couple of days. They have said he may suffer from memory loss for about 6 weeks! Has anyone else heard of this?
Thanks for the good wishes. I'll keep you informed. Thanks again

oh whimsy, sorry can't answer the medical questions, but glad he's ok, x

marthamoo · 26/10/2004 19:06

Whimsy - glad it's over. I don't know all the answers to your questions but the balloon thing is balloon angioplasty - they push a little tube through the arteries and gently inflate it to stretch open any tightenings.

You'll feel better when you've been to visit. Take care.

whimsy so glad it went well. My dad had a quad. bypass a few years ago and I remember how appalling it was, I was so upset and worried. TBH it did take him a while to recover, he wasn't himself for a good 2 or 3 months, but has been so well ever since. Wishing your dad a speedy recovery.

My FIL had one about 3 years ago. He was in the intensive care unit for one day and out of hospital after about a week. As soon as he could master the stairs they let him go. He has been fine ever since. I was amazed at how routine the procedure is and how quick the recovery was. I'm sure your dad will be up and about in no time. xx
