Extremely rare in uk!

They have said it is possibly from a couple of local restaurants but have not ruled out the water courses...

The incubation time can be 3 weeks during which time it spreads and spreads......

have started boiling water

So, go on, tell us where you live so we can either avoid it or start boiling kettles too.

ScaryScaryNight · 25/10/2007 23:56

Oh I had that when I was expecting my first son, boy I was ill..... effing nightmare, and I was in Morocco too, and 11 weeks pregnant, they first thought I had cholera.

please tell us what region you are in!

RoyKinnear · 25/10/2007 23:57

Not too far for me to go...could be doing with losing a few pounds!

No seriously, hope you and yours manage to avoid it.

RoyKinnear · 26/10/2007 00:02

Giardia isn't rare in the UK.

RoyKinnear · 26/10/2007 00:08

says a handful each year in uk

OP posts:
SatanGeorge · 26/10/2007 00:18

Compared to stuff like chicken pox I suppose it is uncommon, but I wouldn't call these figures a handful.

Although I must admit I was basing my comment on my experience in lab reporting in the late 80s/early 90s and the figures have dropped dramatically since then.

RoyKinnear · 26/10/2007 00:23

I had cryptosporidium when there was a big outbreak caused by one of Yorkshire Water's cock-ups. Very nasty.

It is a pita having to boil the water, you have my sympathy. And it is all to easy to forget sometimes and get a glass of water from the tap!

Hope they trace the cause soon.

RoyKinnear · 26/10/2007 00:39

what was the treatment?

OP posts:
SatanGeorge · 26/10/2007 00:43

I was only given standard anti-diarrhoea meds to try to help with the symptoms. I know some people (DH included) were given anti-spasmodics because the cramping was bloody awful.

RoyKinnear · 26/10/2007 00:54

sounds just awful.
could use weightloss....

OP posts:
SatanGeorge · 26/10/2007 00:59

Trust me, there have to be easier ways to lose weight.

ScaryScaryNight · 26/10/2007 08:59

Oh Shudder, the cramping was nearly ripping my guts apart. I got antispasmodic, anti diaorrhea and an anti parasite drug too.

I have honestly never been sicker. I stayed in bed for a whole week, drifting in and out of sleep between running to the toilet.

But because of the long incubation time, the doctor said I had most likely contracte this in the UK.

Really a bad idea for weightloss...

hellyberry · 26/10/2007 09:02

Had this in south america. Awful. You burp/vom poo flavours. Totally foul. Do hope you all avoid it. Treatment is metronidazole or tinidazole, which luckily I got.

ScaryScaryNight · 26/10/2007 09:04

yes gosh, that was the name of it.

I was so scared of losing my baby as I was just 11 weeks pregnant... AND all I had to watch on TV was Osama Bin Laden related, as we flew out on the 11th September....

Can you TELL I have not recovered emotionally from the experience???

Mae1 · 26/10/2007 09:15

Well I live in Leeds - went to Cow & Calf restaurant in Ilkley back at the end of September (28th) - nd have seriously poorly since - severe diarrhoea, dehydration, severe stomach pains, weight loss, complete loss of appetite. Have been off work for 5 weeks - was admitted to St James's put on a drip - passed from pillar to post - every test I've had has come back negative! Nobody knows what I have had. maybe - just maybe - I could have conracted this???? The hospital did prescribe metronidazole and another drug (can't remember name) - which I took for 5 days - they had prscribed this though for something completely different!

RoyKinnear · 26/10/2007 10:41

oh no! i went to pizza express which ajoins the named possibly infected restaurant on saturday night..

waiting for my friend who has had diahrroea since saturday and spent all day tuesday with me to get back from gp

Is there a list of possibly affected restaurants available? I've had a look on google but it only comes up with news articles from Yorkshire Post & the like - no names are mentioned - would be very interested to find out!

RoyKinnear · 26/10/2007 11:05

one is mentioned but the gazette says there are a couple being tested
