Constant wind and gurgling stomach

ilkleymoorbartat · 04/01/2021 15:00

I'm 43, freaking myself out that I've got bowel cancer. Had this on and off for a couple of years now. It's particularly bad at the moment. The wind is terrible.

I'll go to the dr's. But in the meantime any other ideas of what this could be? My anxiety level is high atm!

I've had similar and put it down to sparkling water and fizzy drinks which I consume too many of. When I have a day or two without it goes.

ilkleymoorbartat · 04/01/2021 15:09

I do normally drink fizzy water so I'll lay off it for a bit. But I've not had any today and it's really bad!

You're on the young side but peri menopause can bring such gastric delights.

TheDogsMother · 04/01/2021 18:14

I saw the Dr about this in December because it came on very suddenly and I was worried about being so bloated constantly. They ran a whole load of tests including bowel cancer and everything came back clear. I'd suggest seeing your GP and explain your concerns. If they could run tests at least you can rule out anything more serious and put your mind at rest.

ilkleymoorbartat · 04/01/2021 19:50

I will go and see the doctors, thank you for talking about your experience.
I'm just freaking myself reading stuff about bowel cancer.

Celiac, gluten intolerance or lactose intolerance maybe? Or IBS?

ilkleymoorbartat · 04/01/2021 19:53

Can those things just come on @lazylinguist

Or do you have to have had them since young?

OP posts:
madroid · 04/01/2021 19:54

Or general stress.

TeachesOfPeaches · 04/01/2021 19:55

Happens to me if I eat cheese or a lot of yogurt

Shamzki · 04/01/2021 20:02

Sorry if this is a basic suggestion and you've tried it already, but I get stomach problems like that if I'm eating a lot of unhealthy food. When my diet is healthy food and drinking plenty plain water, my stomach is a lot better. I'd definitely lay off fizzy drinks also. As someone else said, could also be a food intolerance, so good idea to get tested for that.

zaphodbeeble · 04/01/2021 20:02

Charcoal tablets can help

lazylinguist · 04/01/2021 20:32

Yes they absolutely can come on later in life. In fact it's quite common, especially with lactose intolerance, because people produce less lactase (the enzyme that digests lactose) as they get older.

I'm suffering similar symptoms, with stomach aches etc, and I think mine might be lactose intolerance.

ElaineMarieBenes · 05/01/2021 04:14

I did an elimination diet and it’s lactose intolerance for me too! I think it’s quite common for the reasons set out by @lazylinguist.

Newdonewhugh · 05/01/2021 04:24

This happened to me after a stressful situation. It went on for two years and I too thought I was dying as the extra symptoms piled up. My health anxiety was through the roof.
I tried EVERYTHING! Yet it was only when I finally tried to treat the mental problems not the physical that I began to heal.
Meditation vids on YouTube were the first thing I started with. They helped me realise it was pure stress.
I’m 95% better now but it was a grim time x

ilkleymoorbartat · 06/01/2021 15:04

Thanks all. I had full blood test today and did a poo sample. Praying it's just one or something like that.

I have the same symptoms and am the same age as you. I've cut out wheat from my diet and symptoms disappeared after a few weeks. You need to be strict and then reintroduce wheat into your diet and see if your symptoms return. I was desperate to try anything as felt so awful.
Charcoal tablets are great in the meantime. Try not to Google worst case scenarios as it could be anything at the moment. It will make you more anxious which won't help your tummy!
Please do update!

ilkleymoorbartat · 06/01/2021 15:13

Thanks @silver1977 will do!

I'm currently trying to work out what's causing mine. I think it's lactose, but might be wheat as well. I also seem to have a problem with coffee and chocolate Sad (even dark chocolate and black coffee - so unconnected to the milk).

silver1977 · 06/01/2021 18:38

It's so hard to work out isn't it. Tbh everything seemed to affect me all the while I was still eating wheat, things I thought may have been a problem were fine once I'd eliminated the wheat (does take a few weeks to see the true effect). Worth trying. You need to try just one thing at a time.

lazylinguist · 07/01/2021 08:19

Yes, I've read that coeliac disease/gluten intolerance can cause secondary lactose intolerance because it messes with the part of the stomach that produces lactase.

Uganytono · 07/01/2021 08:31

Can I honestly just suggest you all try mindful eating - so just eating really slowly, chewing a lot and some form of relaxation. So meditation etc. before bed.
I honestly went through all of this for two years (I’m 41 now) I thought I was allergic to milk then wheat then tea.....I did elimination diets, I tried literally everything.
Then just when I’d begun to accept it I went on a different path and started going to sleep with these relaxing you tube vids and I started to think “hang on a minute, I feel a bit better today”
I kept putting this down to coincidence but the more I worked on de stressing the more I was getting better and better.
It started with the gurgling, horrific reflux and loose bowels/ erratic bowels. Progressed into heart palpitations, a feeling like something was stuck in my threat, really sore back and neck and muscle twitches.
6 months ago it had taken over my life. Today it is almost gone.
I spent the last year of it swinging between thinking I was dying physically but then wondered if if it was psychological. It was psychological!
I was normal with no mental health probs before this btw. Nothing had ever happened like this.
I just got so so stressed over something and my body obviously physically reacted to it.
Please just give it a try.

lazylinguist · 07/01/2021 09:36

I already do yoga and meditate, and I'm really not stressed out - I don't think it's psychological for me!

ilkleymoorbartat · 08/01/2021 20:24

Just to let you all know my bloods and samples came back normal, so I'm probably going to try an elimination diet. Thanks so much for all your help and advice, I'm definitely going to try a lot of these suggestions.

Do you eat lots of sugar free food as aspartame causes this

ilkleymoorbartat · 08/01/2021 20:35

Not really m, I think my diet is generally pretty bland. I think wheat and caffeine might be the biggest dietary factors for me.
