Toothache making me climb the walls

I have a severe toothache that started on Friday. I can't see a dentist until Wednesday and already I am in bloody agony. It is my lower wisdom tooth that is causing me trouble. It needs to be extracted at the Dental Hospital. I have already been waiting an absolute age for the appointment.

I am now concerned that it an abscess rather than a "normal" infection. (Actually I don't know if there is any difference). But I have been Googling and managed to scare the bejesus out of me about Sepsis and blocked airways.

How worried do I need to be? And what can I do about the pain? Omg the pain. Honestly would rather give birth without pain relief again.

I had an abscess during December, I suffer with toothache regularly but this was something else. I didn’t have any swelling or a lump either (until after they fiddled with it!!!) phone 111. I ended up being sent to a&e and put on a drip. Was horrific x

I’ve just seen this post and had to comment. I have had a few abscess over the years. Horrific pain. A Chinese lady once told me an old remedy was to soak some Cotten wool in sesame oil and push it next to the tooth. The relief made such a difference. It may not work for you of course, but worth a go.

Dentist here. Please do not put cotton wool or sesame reds ear the area, especially if it's a wisdom tooth, as likely there will be an infected pocket of gum. The seeds/cotton fibres will just get trapped in the area and make the situation worse. The first thing the dentist will do regardless, is to flush the area out with a saline rinse to remove any trapped particles

@PennyForTheme how are you? Have you been to dentist?

shinynewapple2021 · 04/01/2021 17:55

@quarentini

Honestly I would take the antibiotics that you have in the house

Have you managed to speak with the dentist and get some antibiotics OP?

I know that medics would say you shouldn't take medication prescribed for others but if it were me, I would be taking the antibiotics already in the house if I couldn't get a prescription today .

Yes I've been to the dentist and I'm not really sure of his advice. Because the tooth is impacted and growing sideways there is an infection underneath the tooth but they can't remove it/ get to the roots. He said that antibiotics would dampen down the infection but not kill it and he didn't want to prescribe antibiotics for pain or for the infection in case it makes me more resistant to antibiotics if it does become a systemic infection. I've been prescribed pain killers and told to salt water hot rinse hourly. Been told he will call the dental hospital tomorrow to try and speed my appointment up and then call me with an update. Any dentists here to advice on that plan? I don't like it and feel like I risked covid (I'm ECV) for nothing
