Sharp pain just under right rib

Twickerhun · 01/01/2021 21:49

Can any one help me? Dr Google isn’t coming up with any answers.

I get a really sharp very painful stabbing pain just under my right rib when I bend over occasionally. It feels like the bottom
Of my rib cage stabs an organ or nerve. The pain is only when I bend down at a certain angle but it bloody hurts enough to make me cry out and feel winded. It happens every couple of months and when it does it frigging hurts massively but it doesn’t happen enough for me to want to bother my GP.

This is where I had gallbladder pain, though it was intermittent attacks if persistent pain, rather than as you describe. GP sent me for an ultrasound, then booked me in to have the thing removed once stones were confirmed. Best thing I ever did - the relief was immediate!

Abdo pain needs a medical professional.

Muscular, gallbladder, liver, bowel... Could be any number of things and nobody here can tell you.

Twickerhun · 01/01/2021 21:53

Ok thanks. I’m rather terrified of liver problems- my parents both died of liver cancer

I don't want to rubbish your fears, but your symptom is not symptomatic of liver cancer, and whilst there may be an inherent risk factor its low. Bluntly, if it was liver cancer, you'd be experiencing far worse and multiple symptoms.

A huge guess, but from your description, it could be a muscle twisting. When that happens, it's massively painful.

But if you are worried, stop thinking about wasting your doctors time. This is what they get paid for, by you! Talk to the doctor.

Sohardtochooseausername · 01/01/2021 22:05

It’s definitely worth seeing your gp for. But it’s likely to be something harmless. I had awful aches and pains there and told my go and got sent for scans and there was nothing doing there. They said it was likely to be gas.

Was it an easy operation? I have gull stones and this Christmas it has been really painful. Normally I can manage it by watching what I eat but this doesn’t seem to be working currently.

Thank you! It’s just really weird that it hurts like near death but only when I lean forward. I’ll pull my big girl pants on and call the doctor

Actuality it's pathetic, but some of the most minor stuff hurts the worst. Go see the doctor!

Very occasionally a muscle just under my ribs with catch and it's agony. www.healthline.com/health/precordial-catch-syndrome

Apparently it's that!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/01/2021 22:31

Mine is the same sort of pain. Generally it aches on and off, but if I bend too far it feels like something catches and it REALLY hurts. Take my breath away hurts.
I waited 10 months for an ultrasound through the lockdown, expecting to be told I had gallbladder problems like my Mum has. But instead I got told I have a fatty liver, which means it's slightly inflamed.

I need to lose weight. Sob.

weebarra · 01/01/2021 22:33

I get that. It's really horrible. I just assumed it was an after effect from the radiotherapy I had for breast cancer.

Ah sorry to hear about your medical history. Hope you are ok now? Other than the pain under the ribs

I have pain like this and it's my intercostal muscle. I injured it years ago and still get occasional pain from certain movements.

weebarra · 01/01/2021 23:18

No worries @Twickerhun, been in remission for a while now.

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 02/01/2021 09:21

@Coffeeandcocopops - it was very straightforward. Day surgery, so out by dinner time. The recovery took about four weeks until I felt completely normal again, but I would add that I am a slow healer. I just made sure I was on top of my pain relief, drinks lots of water and tried to keep moving. I had some shoulder pain afterwards, which is normal, apparently, and to do with the CO2 used during the op. The thing I would mention is the constipation - I had not taken cocadamol before and it came with - ahem - side effects. These things aside, I felt so much better after having the surgery. I hadn't realised how generally unwell it was making me feel.

Ohwhatbliss · 02/01/2021 09:51

I get this sometimes. My GP said it's just a ligament thing but I know how alarming it is when it happens

@QuestionableMouse - may I ask how that was diagnosed? Did you have any particular test to confirm it? Thanks.
QuestionableMouse · 06/01/2021 22:28

It was a while ago but the doc just asked questions and I had xrays. Think I also had bloods done to rule anything more sinister out.
