Confusing advice on what to feed 10mth old recuperating from sickness bug!

DD - 10 months old - has been suffering from a sickness bug (the joys of nursery ) - she hasn't had diarrhea, just the vomiting. It's coming up for 24 hours since she was last sick, but she is refusing all solid food.

We've been feeding her water and then watered down formula milk, but now I've discovered that watering down formula is now no longer recommended. Also that milk should be avoided as it makes the bug linger. But what can I give her to give her as food if she can't have milk and won't take solids??

cooled boiled water or flat ginger ale. Not a lot, just regularly. My two had the bug last week and dh is now laid in bed 'dying' with it.

don't worry about giving her food - as long as she gets enough fluid she'll be fine for 48 hrs.

Thanks, sarahlou - but should I avoid definitely avoid milk then? I've just been surfing and seen oral hydration sachets recommended also. I'm just so confused, I don't know what to give her now

Have you tried contacting your hv? They are more upto date with what you should be doing to keep baby's fluid levels topped up.
Definitely avoid milk - it just encourages the bugs to stay around longer.
Will she have a biscuit? - if so try either rich tea or ginger biscuits.

I've left a message for the HV to contact me but as it is now almost 5pm, I guess she is unlikely to get back to me today.
I think the only biscuits I have are plain digestives or her biscotti biscuits.
I've offered her water all afternoon, but she just pushes the cup away, whereas the other day (when the sickness started) she couldn't get enough water!

a BRAT diet - Bananas, Rice, Apples or Toast.

Hels67, give your doctors a call in the morning and ask for a phone consultation to see what they want you to do.

In the mean time as long as she keeps her fluids down you are doing great

no solids until vomiting caeses. Continue with teaspoons (5ml) of rehydration fluids (eg Dioralyte) every 10 mins.

After vomiting stops, avoid dairy products for a further 72 hours.

DO NOT REHYDRATE WITH WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!! (The body is expelling so much fluid that salts are also lost and replacing the salts is very impt in young infants and children)

Also, if she develops a temp, or is in pain, do not give Ibuprofen as it can cause rapid kidney failure in young infants.

I phoned NHS direct about this on Tues. (dd couldn't keep water down) Latest advice is to feed as normal. milk and everything. I'm afraid I didn't follow the advice as I know it would make her sicker. so for us it was just sips of water. Light food when she hadn't been sick for a good few hours, and definitley no milk.

Hels67 · 25/10/2007 22:07

The HV never got back to me - so I phoned NHS direct and, as you say annoyingdevil, the advice is to feed as usual (milk etc). DD wouldn't drink any water but has had plenty of milk, as I've been desperate to get fluid into her - this is OK apparently as vomiting stopped more than 24 hours ago. They were concerned about dehydration but her nappies have been wet all day.
Also gave her a piece of toast and that was fine, stayed down, the first solid to do so since Monday. DD turned her face away from her usual favourite of banana and yoghurt though. She is fast asleep now, we'll see what tomorrow brings.
Thanks for all your suggestions, posters
