My DD (18 months) has had ringworm on her head since March! We’ve been treating with creams, using an anti dandruff shampoo, changing bedding, towels etc but it’s not going. Web thought it had gone about a month ago but it’s now spread further across her head and to myself and my husband. The dr just says keep applying the cream and that it can take a while to get rid of, but this is months!

Is it usual to take this long? Any advice please Sad

Thank you

You need to get a prescription for the tablets otherwise you are fighting a losing battle.

They wont prescribe her the tablets as she’s too young and I can’t take them because I’m breastfeeding Sad

Is it an antifungal shampoo?

Years ago I added tea tree oil in a cream and got rid of ringworm on my leg.Not sure if you can use tea tree on a baby's head though. The cream from GP did nothing, it just spread. I used a cream with tea tree oil already in it, and at night I added neat tea tree oil to the cream. Within days it had cleared up and I had it for months before then. I used it for a weeks or so after it had gone to make sure it had completely killed it. Ringworm is a fungal infection and tea tree oil is anti fungal.

It shouldn’t take that long to get rid of it , I would ask to be referred to a dermatologist or paediatrician . What cream are you using ?

Changi · 01/01/2021 11:21

I had it a couple of months ago. On the advice of a vet, I rang my GP and explained that the cream wasn't working and he prescribed the tablets. A four week course. It's gone.

I'd check to see if the tablets are suitable at 18 months and if they are, push harder to get them.

Ignore my post above. You have checked.

There are antifungal liquids that can be used in children. I'd enquire further

I caught ringworm from a friend's child, I put athlete's foot cream on the marks at night and covered them with clear nail varnish during the day as recommended by my gran - it worked!

Obviously just for you and DH, not recommending you cover your baby's head in nail varnish.

My.son had "ringworm" as a youngster. Managed to get to the hospital. It was eczema and cutting out dairy fixed it. Ask for a dermatologist referral

Thank you for all the advice. We bought a te tree shampoo but it said not to use it on babies. We have been using an anti fungal shampoo and terbinafine. We have spoken to a dermatologist who recommended that shampoo and cream but we were unable to get any face to face appointments because of Covid. I think I’ll push for that again.

Interesting about the eczema. Did that cause any hair loss at all? She’s lost some hair 😭

I think that if you have ringworm on the scalp you lose hair. But it is not permanent.
