Tooth extraction..

I had a lower molar removed by the emergency dentist yesterday evening due to extreme pain caused by an absess.. I have been up all night bar 2 hours trying everything to stop the thing bleeding. Went to my dentist this morning who packed it and the bleeding has slowed alot but its still bleeding. Im basically drooling pink saliva (pretty!). Is this normal?

Secondly. My face is swollen to the point it looks like I've swallowed a golf ball. How long can I expect this too last. Thank you :)

Toothlessly bumping

Post extraction oozing is normal especially if it's been infected.
Did they give you any gauze packs? It may need a bit more pressure. Fold the pack up or ball it up and place directly over the socket and then really firm biting (or if you don't have a tooth opposite thumb pressure) for 20 minutes without removing/checking it at all. An unused teabag will also work. Has to be black tea as you need the tannin. Dip the teabag in cold water, squeeze it out and use as a pack.
For the swelling Ibuprofen (if you can use it) as per instructions and a cold ice/pack of peas covered in ateatowel applied and removed 5 minutes on five minutes off.
If you start to develop a temperature or heat in the extraction area call 111 as it might be getting infected but the tooth coming out would normally allow any infection to drain and antibiotics are not necessary.

They gave me gauze been using it all night. I used 2 teabags, one for 30 mins and the next one for an hour. Now been using more gauze today but I'm nearly out of it. Didnt get given antibiotics at the out of hours dentist but my dentist gave me some for the swelling but haven't started them as dont want to take them unnecessarily, especially since he said take them for 2 or 3 days until the swelling goes you don't need to complete the course Hmm
I just keep worrying about the blood loss (dr google didn't help matters lol)
Thanks for your response

I've had 4 teeth removed (2 wisdom and 2 pre molars for braces) the swelling can take a few days to sort itself. Painkillers for now and avoid hot drinks. Salt gargle like instructed as that helps with the bleeding too.

MillyMollyMardy · 31/12/2020 19:20

Three days of antibiotics for a dental infection is fine if it's responding so if they thought it was infected and you have a large swelling I would recommend starting them.
A little blood goes a long way. Is it oozing or do you have clots coming off (sorry if too graphic)?

MillyMollyMardy · 31/12/2020 19:21

No rinsing at the moment it's too soon, you want clot to stay in the socket.

AstridAv · 31/12/2020 19:26

When I removed the original gauze last night a small bit of the clot came away and all last night it was bright red blood and lots of it. Today since being packed it is more red tinged dribble (gross)
No clots coming away now. Its nearly been 24 hrs since extraction so I would've thought it should've stopped by this point

I'd say that's generally what to expect.i wouldn't apply any more pressure as you're more likely to dislodge the clot, just go easy with eating and rinsing for a few days
MillyMollyMardy · 31/12/2020 19:32

It sounds like the packing has worked.
Oozing is ok for now, stringy clots would mean more packing is needed. Your infection needs to be cleared up so start the antibiotics. Infected teeth always bleed more on extraction as the tissues around them are inflammed.
If you can try to leave it alone as repeatedly placing a pack and removing it disturbs it slightly and might be adding to the oozing.

User0ne · 31/12/2020 19:37

There's no need to worry about the amount of blood loss. You'd need to lose a pint or 2 for it to be problematic (unless you have certain other conditions) and from your description there's no way you've lost that amount.

Pack it and stop messing with it as much as possible as it will slow the clotting. Put up with the pink dribble (I know it's horrid) and unless it gets worse give it till Monday to settle down. Take the antibiotics.

Thank you. Very much appreciated. Worried about the antibiotics been prescribed erythromycin and they make me vomit. That'll dislodge my clot. I think its swollen because it was hooked and she said my jaw would be very sore as it didn't want to come out. She said antibiotics would be useless and so didn't prescribe. My dentist - who previously missed this absess is who prescribed. I read that swelling is normal and would've thought that the extraction and he poking around after would've gotten rid of the absess. My dentist xrayed today and said my jaw had a crack in it from extraction which would also cause swelling and pain so I'm stumped.

I've heeded all advice and started on the antibiotics. If they're that rough dentist only said I needed them for 2-3 days. Anything to get rid of this pain! Looking forward to sleeping as I only got a 2 hour nap on the sofa last night 🌙

Thank you all

My goodness the pain is horrendous. My face is still huge and im really not sure it should be this flipping painful. I can hardly open my mouth. Basically cant even stick my tounge out

The antibiotics will take 24 hours to start working. The pain is because the swelling is in a confined space. Are you alternating your ibuprofen and paracetamol? You could take codeine phosphate (available over the counter combined with paracetamol) as well but if Erythromycin makes you feel sick this might add to the nausea.
Keep an eye on your swelling, if it is getting worse or you can feel it affecting your swallowing call 111. Why Erythromycin? Are you allergic to Metronidazole or Penicillin?
Once the antibiotics kick in the pain will start to decrease. definitely don't use any hot compresses.
How is the oozing?

AstridAv · 01/01/2021 13:41

Thank you, the oozing is much better. Yes I am due some paracetamol now and then in a couple of hours I'll take some ibuprofen. Trying to stay away from codeine as it constipates me. Im allergic to penicillin. The oozing has definately massively improved!
No I've been using an ice pack. I fell asleep after my painkillers and antibiotics this morning. I've only just woken up😳

Good news. The antibiotics should start helping soon. Keep alternating your painkillers.
Any sign of increasing swelling or problems with swallowing call 111.
