Link between silent reflux and persistent cough?

I have just read a suggestion that there maybe a link between silent reflux, and a resulting cough, and was wondering if anyone else had any experience of this. My dd has just come off gaviscon at 15 months, but has had a cough for 3 months. It's not severe, and mainly affects her in the morning on waking. I have taken her to the GP who prescribed an inhaler which has made no difference.

Any thoughts greatly received.

Hi Lauren, my DS also has a persistent cough and has done for about 8 months now. He also has a chest recession (sucks his ribs in when he's breathing) and pants a lot. We've been referred from GP to paediatrician to respriatory specialist looking for a diagnosis and we're now about to go for a bronchiloscopy. Anyway, DS has been prescribed various inhalers (none of which has made any difference btw) and one of the doctors also prescribed him a medicine for reflux, as he said that children with a persistent cough also often have problems with reflux. So that was a very round about way of saying, yes I have heard of it! I can't remember what the medicine was that was prescribed (but not a bog standard gaviscon type thing)... we didn't use it for very long as it didn't work for DS. However the doctor that prescribed it said that there was a link between refluxy symptoms and a cough. Sorry for the ramble, hth!

Well this may help.

Whenever I get a cold I lose my voice (I am a teacher) and was sent to ENT surgeon.

Discovered I have some acid reflux, which ...wait for it...can cause coughing, one of the biggest causes.

It is here on my helpsheet from the clinic! I guess it affects babies as much as adults.

HTH

Ds had severe reflux (silent) and I have definitely heard of this although it didn't affect him. Just a thought: if it was caused by reflux it would probably be worse in the morning, because she has been lying flat all night?

I went to see the GP today about a chronic cough in my 3 month old DS. Examination normal, we kind of agreed it must just be due to his reflux. Offered a paed referral if it worsens.

So it sounds like yes, a cough can be related. Logical, I guess, if their poor throat's getting burned all the time .
