Oh - meant to say that i've been given some tablets to help with the dizziness but how long will they take to work?

You poor thing! I just googled it and I felt dizzy reading it. Is it something that can be controlled or will it go away?

elliemac · 24/10/2007 21:02

I think i have to take these tablets for 2 weeks. Think it can last quite a while though - Hope not!!!

chocolateshoes · 24/10/2007 21:04

I had it a few years ago & it is horrible - poor you. It can last for anywhere between 1-4 weeks and unfortunately it can recur once you've had but in my case it has never come back as badly as the 1st time.

I hope it wears off soon!

elliemac · 24/10/2007 21:06

Oh don't say that - i don't want this back! Its like when you've had too much to drink and you get the bedspins! (not that i get that feeling at all these days

Is it similar to vertigo then? i suffer with vertigo, not nice. Infact suffering slightly with it atm as i have a very bad cold and colds seem to bring it on again. If i turn around too quickly i lose my balance, also terrible in the dark, i have actually got out of bed and run into the wall(pmsl about that but not nice at the time)

I was given tablets which eased it alot.

moopymoo · 24/10/2007 21:09

ooh my sis had this a few months ago was really poorly and preg so couldnt take anything. it did just suddenly go though so hang in there.

elliemac · 24/10/2007 21:10

It must be similar to vertigo cause the other day when i was out shopping the floor seemed all spongey and i always feel as though i'm veering off to the one side. Its wierd i always thought you could only get vertigo when you were actually up a height but now i know thats not the case. Have been doing a bit of research you see!!

vertigo/vertigo type feelings are a symptom of labyrintitis not the same. it is a viral infection of the labyrinth of the ear iirc

Would like to know how long the tablets take to work - Don't feel any effects at all yet. Only started them today though.

Poor you, it's horrible.

Sometimes if I'm run down or tired I feel like the pavement is coming over my head from behind but it never gets as bad as when I had it the first time.

pucca · 24/10/2007 21:28

Ah so they are the same.

It is awful, tablets worked pretty quick iirc, a day or 2 i started to feel much better, it does come back every so often though, like i said earlier especially when you get a cold ime.

pucca · 24/10/2007 21:29

Oops so they are not the same, but similar, should read thread properly.

boolepew · 24/10/2007 21:33

I was diagnosed with vertigo last week and it's shite! what tablets were you given mine is semetil but i stopped taking them as they just floored me. if i wasn't sleeping i was trying to stay awake. I got some tablets from our local health shop yesterday and the work much better. i know you can keep getting vertigo attacks so am not very happy.

My mum has this and I think there is another close disease called Mellieurs or something? It makes her literally really sick everywhere and I know she finds it very frightening. She find the tablets work quite quickly, although after her recent bout she had to stay on them for a lot longer. Sorry, that's prob not helpful, I just wanted to commiserate - sounds like beeing very very drunk on a ferry without any of the fun bits at all.

fizzbuzz · 24/10/2007 21:42

I had it for 3 months and it was horrible. You are only supposed to take tablets for a very limited time, as the balance mechanisms cannot right them selves if the brain thinks it is ok.

Cawthorne-cooksey exercises are what you need. It is physio for the inner ear, and they work. Trust me, I spent 6 weeks shaking my head and rolling my eyes

fizzbuzz · 24/10/2007 21:44

I can explain how they work if you need to know. Also they are not well known about, and people can suffer for years with balance related illnesses, when these exercises can work

elliemac · 25/10/2007 09:50

Fizzbuzz - Would love to know how these work. Should have explained actually that i've had this before about 5 years ago and was given Stemetil. This time its Cinnarizine. I had actually read that its not good to take the tablets for any lenghth of time so i'd be very interested to know about the exercises - Thanks!

OP posts:
fizzbuzz · 25/10/2007 18:01

You can google them, I will try and find a link later. Basically, it is about doing anything like rolling your eyes, shaking your head very fast to make you feel as dizzy as possible.

This helps the brain re-order balance mechanisms.

elliemac · 25/10/2007 20:41

Have googled Fizzbuzz! The thought of rolling my eyes makes me want to chunder though! Might give it a go when the nausea shifts - Thanks

OP posts:
fizzbuzz · 25/10/2007 20:58

Yes, perhaps wait until it is just dizziness.

I was really ill with it, very weak and it just went on and on. When the weakness went, I started the exercises, and it took about 2 weeks and then I started to really feel a lot better.

Think I had it very very badly though. Never had a recurance mimd you.

Hope you feel better soon. Also, resist temptation to lay down or sit still as much as poss. I know it makes you feel better, but it stops the old balance mechanisms doing their job.

Believe me, after how I suffered I know EVERYTHING about that horrible illness, I was even admitted to hospital with unbearable earache, although this isn't normally a symptom. Made me feel whole lot better knowing that!
