Hi, my dd is 17 months old. She has had eczema since she was a couple of months old but apart from that she has never really been sick. Twice in the last month she has had a head cold that rapidly developed into a chesty cough requiring her to use a nebulizer and take oral steroids for three days. I understand that these steroids can cause her immune system to be lowered so I am not sure if I can take her to toddler group, have contact with other kids for the moment etc. Will be seeing doctor next week so I can ask then but just wondering if anyone has been through it. Thanks.

Yes, we have with ds2 last winter. Its horrible when they get to that stage but the prednisolone really helped. We were advised to keep him quiet and resting as much as possible and I did keep him away from toddler groups so he was less likely to catch anything else. We ended up in a and e 4 times last winter as simple colds led to horrendous breathing problems. The prednisolone acts quickly but they are still ill iyswim. Have you seen your GP? You may need inhalers for her. Not trying to scare you ,its horrible when they get so ill.

My DD has had a fair bit of prednisilone. We weren't advised to avoid other children while she was on it. However, when she was on it, she was fairly poorly, so she didn't mix with others for that reason.

Hi, thanks for the replies. She only had to take the prednisolone for 3 days along with an antibiotic. It is a week now since the last attack and she is a lot better although she does seem to tire a bit quicker. Forgot to say she also has a ventolin inhaler that she was taking twice a day but now as needed. It was very scary - we had to take her to the doctor at 5am as she was barely able to breathe. I was already a nervous mum and now I am worried that this will be ongoing. I am from a large family and growing up none of us ever needed more than an antibiotic so this seems scary to me.

My DD started with asthma symptoms around your DD's age. She's 5.5 now, and her last attack was a year ago. We have no family history of it, and I'm hoping that she has grown out of it.
