Coughing blood and lung cancer

Hi all,

My DM has been coughing up small rust-coloured spots of blood this morning.

She has S4 lung cancer, but apparently this hasn't happened before. Has been feeling slightly rougher than usual last few days.

I just tried to persuade her to call 111 to speak to a doctor and she cried and begged me not to, said that it's only happened a few times and she doesn't feel that bad after all Hmm.

Am I overreacting? I mean, I'm not suggesting she goes to A&E, just seems like something a doctor should assess? She has an appointment with her consultant in one week and she thinks that bringing it up then is sufficient.

Does she have a cancer nurse? My dm has a team of nurses that work in oncology and we were given a number that we could call anytime with any concerns.

No - she didn't follow it up.

I recently lost my 48yr old husband to thyroid cancer which had spread to his lungs, bones and liver. He also coughed up blood but it was mainly blood stained phlegm, dark coloured blood not fresh. He used to take photos so he could show his consultant.

I echo what pp said about contacting cancer nurse or if she has a Macmillan nurse perhaps speak to them.

I think if she’s feeling unwell she probably should be checked out but I can absolutely understand her reluctance. She must be very scared.

My experience of 111 is they would send out paramedics and he’d end up in A&E whenever my husband mentioned he had cancer. Really hope you manage to persuade her to speak to someone. x

My dm was just given a business card with the department number on, we've called them a couple of times with concerns and they've been really helpful. You could probably just ring the dept where she's had treatment and ask for a nurse to call you.
