Should I see someone about this back pain or ride it out?

I’ve had lower back pain since I was pregnant over five years ago, causing a bit of sciatica. I’ve seen the GP several times and I’ve essentially been told to do physio, take pain killers and crack on, which I have. But since about Friday, I’ve had really horrible pain in my lower back. It feels like there’s one extremely tender area, it’s a sharp pain that shoots over to the left hand side from the centre, and the muscles around it are agonising. It’s much different than my ‘usual’ back pain, I can barely move, bend down to use the loo (sorry), can’t sleep. I’ve taken codeine and paracetamol and naproxen, even though I’m not really meant to have NSAIDS due to severe asthma. I’m feeling sick from all the tablets. I can’t remember having injured myself but it really feels that way. I am concerned if I bother my GP they’d just send me on my way like usual, but not entirely sure where else to turn. Can anyone please give me some advice? Thank you. Flowers

Can you see a private physio? I’ve had a disc issue that’s been lingering on since July and only recently seen a good physio. Ended up with severe radiation to my leg. Wish I’d just sorted it out months ago so I’d been properly diagnosed and known what I should and shouldn’t been doing. plus at times the pain has felt unbearable.

I would see an osteopath or chiropracter as soon as possible.

I’ve never had imaging for it, would it be worth trying to get imaging?

Speak to the go - they should be able to give you a short course of diazepam to take alongside the cocodamol (ideally you want 30/500)

This should belp you get through the flare up

They may also be able to refer you for an mri to see what's going on

Do not ride it out - you could make it much worse (from bitter experience). You need to see both the gp and a private physio ASAP - even just a session or two could make a big difference as they can show you what to do to mitigate the pain. Hope it gets better soon.

Thank you, I’m up in pain again. Plus DS(5) is hypo.

Definitely get seen. You're describing what I felt, location wise, and I dismissed it for >24hrs as "just" a bad flareup of an old back problem. I got a right bollocking from my doctor for leaving it so long when I finally gave in to DH's nagging to go to the ER and was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis (gallstones related.) Could have been extremely serious if I'd left it any longer.

Thanks everyone I did an Econsult today and the doctor has prescribed me some diazepam.

This pain is extraordinary. I have half a suspicion it’s kidney related

Have you looked at or tried Youtube video exercises for back pain.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/12/2020 13:52

Can you ring back?. This amount of pain is not normal.

BrandonBliss · 24/12/2020 21:22

Turns out I’ve got kidney stones and pyelonephritis

Are you in hospital?.

Went up on the advice of my GP on Thursday and they gave me some treatment and tests and said I was ok to go home and go back for more scans in the coming days
