Can anyone share any ideas as to why I might have an awful bitter taste/numbness to my tongue?
It's been months now, I have weekly Covid tests so it's not that.
I have good dental hygiene and floss/brush daily.
No tonsils and DH assures me no bad breath (he'd tell me)

The taste is akin to if you accidentally eat a pith of an orange, bitter but a slight numbness you'd get from Bonjela (the gel you give to teething babies)

I'm more keen to get rid of it even if I can't work out what's causing it.

Are you taking any medication? I have to take a drug which causes an unpleasant taste as a sice effect.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 21/12/2020 19:39

No I don't take any medication.

Oral thrush?

Sertchgi123 · 21/12/2020 19:50

Acid reflux.

Katinthedoghouse · 21/12/2020 19:59

Pine nuts ?

I had this once and it was awful. I stopped eating them and normality resumed.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 21/12/2020 20:27

I haven't eaten pine nuts in years so not that.

Oral thrush? Maybe I have chronic navel thrush Blush and am permanently run down but wouldn't it have other symptoms? White patches, soreness and/or itching?

Iron deficiency causes tongue and mouth problems

TitsalinaBumSquash · 21/12/2020 21:08

I have suffered with anaemia in the past and been on/off iron supplements so that might be it.

I think b12 deficiency can cause mouth symptoms as well I think.

Literallyfedup · 21/12/2020 23:03

Lpr or silent reflux can cause the symptoms you are describing. Another indicator could be a white coated tongue at the back which is usually because of reflux. You might also have a slightly dry mouth or foamy saliva.
To get rid of the taste you need to get the reflux under control and also clean the tongue at the back. Gaviscon advance is usually helpful.

Did you ever find out the cause? I have had a similar problem for nearly 3 months now. Dentist says it's not a dental problem. Gp prescribed omeprazole (from telephone consultation) but made no difference. I've now been referred to a specialist. The taste seems to be coming from only one area in my mouth. I'd say it's tastes like artificial sweetener mixed with metal.

Hi. No I've not completely cracked it, I started taking gentle iron with
B12 and it gone from constant to intermittent at least.

I'm trying a vegan diet to see if that helps. I'm a week in a no change yet.

I have successfully got rid of mine after suffering from vile taste since 10 months. I went to gp, dentist, and ent. ENT said it could be sinuses and gave a spray, GP gave me omeprazole, and dentist said it could be mild gingivitis (on the phone) but said unlikely to cause bad taste.
So I did one treatment then the next , sometimes some worked and never got rid of the taste fully.
Eventually I realised that I had reflux which was irritating my sinuses and both my sinuses and reflux were irritating my gums. All 3 issues was causing dry mouth causing my tongue to go white at the back (not yeast infection).
So I took omeprazole for a month and used my nasal spray . I also started using a water flosser, tongue cleaner and switched to Colgate pro sensitive toothpaste because my teeth started getting sensitive because of all this.
I also drank sparkling water for a week, stopped wearing a bra, and now sit in a proper position.
After doing all this my bad taste started diminishing and went away completely after 15 days.
However, sometimes bad taste is also caused by gallbladder issues , if your nails are becoming yellow and if you get nausea after eating fatty food then please discuss it with your GP.
