It started like a tiny pin prick about 2 weeks ago and its getting bigger and redder its now about the size of a round pin head iyswim.

Its really red and angry looking.

How old is he? My DS got the same at a few weeks old and it stayed like that for a few months. Recently it has started to fade and get smaller and I think it might end up like a very small mole. I didn't think it was anything to worry about (well, once it stopped growing that is - I was getting worried that it might become a big birthmark and was v relieved when it didn't).

alibobins · 23/10/2007 18:58

He's 2.9 to be honest thats my main worry that it will just keep getting bigger and its quite close to his eye.

Mention to the HV/GP? It will probably be nothing but if you're worried get it checked out.

alibobins · 23/10/2007 21:14

Yes he's got an appointment with gp tomorrow anyway.

ok gp gave it a name which was long and I can't remember. He said it will probably grow some more then either die anf fall off or it will be removed

Well that doesn't sound too bad in the scheme of things. At least it's not cancerous or likely to turn into a huge mark - and it will either sort itself out or there is something they can do.

Did GP give you a timescale?

alibobins · 24/10/2007 21:03

No time scale and in view of his other health issues it was good news.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realise your DS has health problems. I hope not too serious.

seeker · 24/10/2007 21:13

I remember that my dd;s friend had something similar -I can't remember the name. Anywat, it grew until it was ablut the size of a currant, then it suddenly poured blood - the went away leaving no scar at all. I wonder if it's the same ?

alibobins · 24/10/2007 22:04

NUK-really don't worry I was just glad its nothing too serious but also a little upset cos its on his face.

Seeker-I hope it is the same although it is quite near his eye so not sure it could grow to that size.

My DS had something like this when he was a baby - I think he was about 9 months and had slightly scratched himself on the cheek one day. Anyway for some reason his body reacted to it and sent blood vessels to the area (this is how it was explained to me) and started to grow this red spot thing. It wasn't until the doctor mentioned the scratch that I remembered. It was called a granuloma I think.

DS's was in a similar place, just to the side of his nose below his eye. Anyway it grew and one day when he was fighting over having his face wiped it burst and did it bleed. So then it had a scab but was prone to bleeding again, because whenever DS was tired he would rub his eyes and catch it. DH used to have to hold his hands while I was drying him after bath. Anyway in the end DS had to have it removed two days before his first birthday. He looks like he has a black eye and has a big dressing on all his birthday photos but the op was relatively simple and went well. He has a small visible scar on his face, but often people haven't seen it until it is pointed out so it is not particularly noticeable.

If you think it is the same thing let me know and I will see if I can dredge up some more info.

alibobins · 25/10/2007 20:51

It really does sound like that from your discription but i'm not sure if thats what the doctor called it.

How big did it grow this seems to be getting redder every day it looks like a bubble filled with blood.

Was it a GA when it was removed and did you have to have a referal to a hospital.

It started off like a tiny red pin prick and then grew and became raised gradually. And yes it did look like a blood blister. But then once it first bled it had lots of scabbing on it, so it became mis-shaped and hard to tell what it was. The CP originally mis-diagnosed it as a strawberry nevus (birth mark that gradually disappears) which was wrong because he was too old (as is your DS) when it started.

We went to the GP because of the bleeding, but she wouldn't refer us because of the above reason. But then we had recurrent heavy bleeding and a locum did refer us. And it was only two weeks from referral to operation. I imagine without the bleeding this would take longer.

Yes DS did have a GA and yes I was worried at the time as he was still officially a baby (11 months and 29 days!). But he was fine. For other reasons DS has had another 4 operations since then so I am now a bit blase about it, but at the time I wasn't. They let me go to theatre with him and hold him while he went under. And then I was there for him to wake up.

bozza · 25/10/2007 21:41

This is what DS had.

bozza · 25/10/2007 21:43

If you scroll down the top pciture is what DS's looked like before he knocked it.

alibobins · 26/10/2007 09:02

That top picture is exactly the same and its not far off being the same size as that one on the picture it seems to grow day by day

It has started to irritate him these past couple of days and he keeps telling me that he is playing with his spot but its not bled yet.

Not sure if gp will refere him for a GA as ds does have severe respitory problems.

I would really like it removed as it is only about a cm away from his eye

OP posts:
bozza · 26/10/2007 20:54

TBH if it is so close to his eye and a young child I don't think they would consider doing it without a GA. But it would be quite a short GA. I think you should go back to the GP - because obviously this is on your mind.

alibobins · 12/11/2007 18:39

Well its grown and over the last week has done nothing but bleed even in the night.

Went to gp last week and he said they wont do anything until apri

I'm going to try and get him seen again this week.

Hello, I have just come across this page and it sounds like I have the same thing with my little boy, I replied to a couple of threads on another page so have just cut and paste my comments below....also, since I wrote the last post about his angioma dropping off it has actually grown back again, although it's not bleeding this time. Anyhow, we have an appointment with a surgeon next week about having it removed so will see what they say and keep you posted.

Hello Islasmummy, I read your post with interest as my 8 month son has exactly the same symptoms as your little girl, about 3 weeks ago he got what I thought was a tiny blood blister on his chin, however, in the last week or so it has really grown and although I've been to the doctor they aren't sure if it is a strawberry mark or not, we had to take him to casualty yesterday as it wouldn't stop bleeding for two hours and the doctor there has referred him to a dermatologist but I wondered if anyone else could shed some light on this as it is really worrying us.

Hello jjmom, yes I agree it is very confusing as I had lots of conflicting diagnosis, since posting my thread we saw the determatologist at the hospital, he said it was an angioma (I'm still unclear as to if this is a kind of strawberry mark or not) anyhow, he said that it would eventually go on its own accord but because it keeps on bleeding we could have it removed. He referred us to a plastic surgeon and said that they tended to freeze or burn them off, however, two days ago, it started bleeding again but on closer inspection I realised that it had dropped off. It now seems to have completely gone and is healing over nicely. Not sure if this helps or not but I thought I would let anyone who may be going through a similar thing what the outcome was in the end.

alibobins · 25/11/2007 17:25

Hi fiona- I've since posted new threads about this anyway to cut a long story short he had emergency surgery on it over a week ago but its still causing him problems
