Anyone recognise these symptoms?

Does anybody recognise this list of seemingly random symptoms?

Female, 44
Weight gain despite strict calorie counting
Fatigue (could easily sleep 10hrs a night if allowed)
Muscle soreness after exercise that seems disproportionate to effort
Repeated running injuries and niggles
Headaches after effort and generally just regular tension headaches
Slightly achey finger joints

Is this just what it feels like to be 44?

Peri menopause

BaileysAndIceForOneplease · 18/12/2020 13:27

Are you me? Yup, probably forties, peri menopause. If you're worried, approach a sympathetic GP. I know not all of them are but hopefully local friends can recommend someone.

Okunoshima · 18/12/2020 13:28

I would get some bloods done to check your thyroid

museumum · 18/12/2020 13:48

Thank you. Sounds like it could be peri menopause but also I do seem to have all the symptoms of low thyroid function.
None of it feels bad enough to see the gp about though.

Too much running?
Lack of vit D?

DrDetriment · 18/12/2020 13:50

Thyroid. Get it checked.

Bumblesbumbles · 18/12/2020 13:54

Also get bone profile bloods done and check for calcium levels

MrsMiaWallis · 18/12/2020 13:55

Peri menopause

MrsMiaWallis · 18/12/2020 13:56

Also second too much running and low vitamin D

museumum · 18/12/2020 13:59

@underneaththeash

Too much running? Lack of vit D?
I’m taking a normal vitD supplement (not the mega super level, just normal otc) and it’s definitely not too much running, I can barely manage 5k 2-3 times a week these days, I’m wiped out after :(

I might save up for a private “well woman” blood test in the new year as it looks like they look at thyroid and oestrogen and vitD all at the same time.

If you have these symptoms I’d just go to your GP and I’m sure they will get you would do a full blood count, thyroid, hormone and bone profile blood tests

DrDetriment · 18/12/2020 16:57

Could also be iron deficiency. Get full iron checked including ferratin. Ferratin that is under 30 can cause these sorts of symptoms and is very common in middle aged women.

museumum · 18/12/2020 19:45

@DrDetriment - I’ve never failed the test when you give blood (2-3x a year) so assume my iron must be ok?

I'm 41 and I've had these symptoms for a year or so (and also a few more). Pretty sure I'm perimenopausal.

abigailthespiderinthehat · 18/12/2020 20:22

Posted too soon- pretty sure I'm perimenopausal but put these symptoms to just general getting older.

MrsMiaWallis · 19/12/2020 00:30

I had everything you describe from age 45 to 51. Luckily! I then started hot flushes and was prescribed hrt and all those symptoms are now a distant memory

DrDetriment · 19/12/2020 08:05

@museumum it is still worth checking iron. The barrier for being 'ok' under the NHS and for giving blood is actually pretty low and you can still have symptoms.
