5 month old bf baby with diarrhea

For the last 4/5 days or so my ds has been having 7/8 watery stools per day, used to have 2 bowel movements max per day previous to this.

The stools are very watery, smelly and sometimes green. He has had a cold and drooling alot so teething. Ive checked out kellymom which advises to keep on nursing which I have been but I am worried about him losing weight and becoming dehydrated even though he produces plenty of wet nappies. Is there anything else I can do to help clear it up or should I go to GP.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Go to the GP. If its been going on that long he needs looking at really. It's probably just a bug but better to safe than sorry.

Poor wee mite, I would take him to the docs to be on the safe side. sorry I'm not much help

gigglewitch · 22/10/2007 21:04

looks like we're unanimous on visit to GP.

is baby totally bf or any formula or solids? just wondered if s/he could be reacting to something unusual in diet. if exclusively bf then obv not!!

motherhoodrocks · 22/10/2007 21:20

Thanks for advice, will get on to GP's first thing tomorow morning.

GW - DS is exclusively bf (have tried to get him used to formula just in case i have to leave him with DH but he totally and utterly refjects a bottle!)and not yet on solids holding out on solids till he hits the magic 6 months.

If the GP was to prescribe a pediatric electrolyte solution any advice on how to administer it as DS totally refuses to accept any type of bottle.

Thanks again.

with medicine syringe thingy? i'd just keep on bf, that should really provide baby with everything, unless fontanelle is sunken and baby lethargic.

I asked about formula milk and diet as my DS's did green yucky (projectile at times) fizzy poo, {TMI!} they are intolerant to cows milk. There are a few threads going on about dairy intolerance at the moment, if you think it's relevant then have a look around the OP's.

Thanks, will definately get a medicine syringe thingy from pharmacy.

He has just filled yet another nappy so off to sort him out and put the little darling to bed.

How's the wee one today?

motherhoodrocks · 23/10/2007 11:09

Hi, he is ok this morning has yet to have a bowel movement which is really surprising actually he would usually have had at least 2 by now. I have been on to GP's and have an appt this afternoon. Apart from diarrhea he's his usual happy jolly self, thanks for asking.

After reading gigglewitch's post yesterday I thought about my diet and whether that may have anything to do with his diarrhea, and it ocurred to me that since last week I started having an egg for breakfast. So I havent had one this morning and so far so good! Still keeping GP appt and will research a bit more about intolerances on here.

Babies can be really sensitive to egg. DD1 had a mild allergy when i first weaned her but grew out of it.

lomondgore · 23/10/2007 21:09

Glad he is a bit better, sounds like it could be worth researching food intolerances. Maybe try keeping a food diary just in case? See if anything triggers it again.

gigglewitch · 23/10/2007 21:52

OOh good researching MHR! glad could be of use!

mandymac · 23/10/2007 21:56

Just a thought, and obviously no subsitute for getting it checked out at the doctors, but when DD was teething and used to get nasty 'teething' poos - acid smelling, green and runny, we used to give her 'Ashton and Parsons' teething powders, which are supposed to help settle the stomach.

gigglewitch · 23/10/2007 22:00

thought these powders were fab too ... until we discovered that they contain lactose (i think it was that - defo something on our 'no' list) check the packaging and try them out - will go one way or t'other and hopefully become obvious whether they are curing or irritating him.
