Any optometrists/ophthalmologists about? Weird eye problems!

I have a quite a strong glasses prescription (short sighted). I've been experiencing reduced vision in my left eye for over a year. This became noticeable after a bang on the head last October and despite getting my eye looked at at the eye hospital back then, nothing was found. I then went to the opticians in summer as my vision was getting worse. They said my eyes have stopped working together and they suspected some kind of wrinkling in the macula at the back of the eye. I got new glasses with a prism lens in the left eye but this has not properly corrected the problem. It is slightly better when wearing the prism glasses but only at certain distances and sometimes i have a bit of double vision.

I had to wait months for a scan at the eye hospital, which I've just had today. The consultant was not particularly helpful and didn't answer my questions very well. Apparently there is nothing wrong with the macula but I have a posterior vitreous detachment and some minor opacity in the lens. My issue is that i don't think PVD really seems to fit my symptoms. My mum just had one too and had flashes and arcs in her eye. I've had none of those. I've just experienced a gradual worsening of vision and the feeling that my left eye isn't working properly. Like I can't focus with it properly. If I close my right eye i have to hold my phone very close to my left eye to be able to read properly. I do have lots of floaters in both eye (a very big, noticeable one in the left) and I've had a retinal detachment in my right eye ten years ago, which they think may have been caused by a PVD. So my eyes are pretty rubbish!

I've now got to wait until the consultant writes to my opticians and then I can see them again. I don't know how long this will take and I'm stressing in the meantime having been given zero reassurance or possible solution by the consultant. Can anyone help? I'd really like to be able to see properly again. Thanks in advance.

Have you had an OCT OP? That would rule out many retinal or macula problems.

It could just be the cataract, it’s usual for very short-sighted people to develop cataracts at a younger age. Cataracts often cause a reduction in contrast sensitivity as well as making things generally less clear. do things look less black with that eye?

@underneaththeash I think that's the scan I had yesterday. It was a blue light with a red line that moved downwards. It was to check for macula wrinkles but nothing found apparently.
It's hard to tell if things look less black as apparently I have opacity in the other eye too. I wouldn't mind but I'm only 36!

Sorry, Op I thought I'd replied. It's good that the OCT was clear (it is the thing with the line).
As I said, very shortsighted people do develop eye problems like PVD and cataract earlier and cataracts can affect certain types of vision more than others. You can ask your optometrist if you may be suitable for cataract surgery.
Sometimes exercises can strengthen eye muscles. It's worth asking about that too when you next see them.

That's really helpful, thank you. I'm seeing my opticians in the new year so will see what they say.
