Tooth extraction...now what?

I recently had the worst pain of my life, filling cracked splitting my tooth in two. It needed to be removed which I’ve now had done, Horrific.
My dentist suggested an implant but it costs 2k for one tooth Shock It was a very large tooth near the back, luckily I can’t see it when I smile but it feels such a large space, a finger’s width. I’ve read online that other teeth may move about.
Any one got any experience of this kind of issue?

Hi,

Sorry, posted too early.

I am not a dentist but I am a dental nurse. Of all the dentists I have worked with, they all say pretty much the same thing to their patients. Your teeth move life long regardless. That doesn't matter if you've had braces, not had braces, had extractions or not had extractions. But, because you've had an extraction, there is a chance that because there is now more room for the teeth to move around - they will. But who knows, they also may not. Even if you were to have an implant, there's still no saying wether your other teeth will move around eventually because for most people as we get older, they do. HTHSmile

I had a molar out many years ago. I left the gap to allow wisdom teeth a bit of space to expand into. In hindsight I should have had the gap plugged with an implant or bridge. I've been favouring eating on one side of my mouth for 20 years!

Thank you,
I can’t afford 2k for an implant. The gap seems gigantic, no wonder it felt so bloody resistant to coming out.

I had the third tooth back from the back removed for similar reasons. It was £50 v £2.5k. The dentist very heavily pushed for the implant but there was no way I could do it at the time.

Ten years ago and no problems at all and no issues with eating on that side.

Oh thanks, that’s reassuring! He did mention a false tooth on a plate (I think) but didn’t seem to think that was advisable. Maybe because it isn’t 2k Grin

Mine was taken out and the gap has closed up a bit. It's not noticeable when I smile so I've left it. Doesn't cause any issues

My husband had a missing tooth. For about 2 years he had a plate with a tooth on it and obviously took it out each night. He got fed up and had a bridge fitted. The teeth either side are filed down and 2 metal inserts go into the teeth on either side. This was 15 years ago at a cost of £700. It fell out this year, but dentist was able to re fix it as it would have cost £2,000 for a new bridge. He wouldn’t have been able to leave it as it was as the teeth either side were just stumps and showed when he spoke. I have a tooth with a really large old filling that really needs extracting. I feel I would leave a gap and see how it goes at first.

I've had two back teeth missing, on on either side for years. My teeth haven't moved and I don't notice the gaps at all

This is all very encouraging, thank you. I have a real fear of the dentist. Not sure why or when as my mum was very strict about taking us.
I had beautiful teeth until my late twenties when a gap at the front started. I’d like it filled it in but not had it done. I did have them bleached before my wedding which worked but made them sensitive. I do go now for my routine check ups, hygienist appointments etc and just grin and bear it. I previously had a wisdom tooth out which was very straightforward, not like this one. I just let thst heal up and never really thought about it.
He really struggled getting it out but it was a whopper. Because it was big it feels like a black hole!

I’ve had two teeth extracted
The first one the gap didn’t bother me
The second one does , it just doesn’t feel right
I’m
Considering an implant and paying over a year on a payment plan
My jaw just doesn’t feel right without it
It’s very strange

I hate my teeth , I’m 47 and they are turning to shit
No doubt I’m paying the price for being a smoker

icelollycraving · 15/12/2020 22:23

I’m same age, not a smoker. I drink though.
