DH has no long-term memory recall

My DH can not remember any of his childhood under the age of 12. He has no recollection of ever being at primary school; he is 41 but I've known him since he was 30 and this has always been the case.
Are there conditions that could cause this or any other reason? I find it bizarre.

He generally lives day by day without much intention or paying much attention to stuff, although he is incredibly intelligent.

I can only guess that,as a child, he wasn't aware of much that was going on, I can imagine that he didn't make many choices and relied on his parents to direct him. I'm told that he was a very good child who always did as he told but he was a bit of a daydreamer at times.

I'll be interested to see any theories or ideas as to why DH doesn't remember much.

Sounds like he possible may have inattentive adhd /add. That definitely affects memory and fits the day dream description

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 13/12/2020 10:10

I'm the same; I have very little memory of my childhood, I don't know why.

leafinthewind · 13/12/2020 10:12

I wonder if he has more memory than he can readily access, and essentially chooses not to try. DH says he doesn't remember a lot, but I've known him since we were little kids and I know that he DOES remember many things - he just doesn't value or seek out the memories much.

Danni91 · 13/12/2020 10:15

I dont remember fuck all from childhood, barely nothing from my teenage years either.
My memory is naff. Always has been.
I take thousands of pictures & videos to remember my kids because when i had my second I realised how much I dont remember my eldest first years.

I just go through them sometimes and I'm like 'oh yeah that was a thing- that happened!'

It's never really bothered me though until the past 3 years.

Luckingfovely · 13/12/2020 10:17

I remember almost nothing of my abusive childhood - but I know that I've blanked it out because it's easier to live my life that way. Not suggesting this is his reason, but it is a reason for certain people.

vdbfamily · 13/12/2020 10:21

I cannot remember very much and what I do remember it's stories that family have talked about since so may not be real memories. My oldest at 17 is awaiting assessment for possible ADHD and I am now wondering if I might have it too. My old school reports suggest I might have. I tend to only remember very essential bits of info and the rest is quickly forgotten.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 13/12/2020 11:22

Mine is the same, no memories before about age 10, incredibly intelligent but routinely doesn't notice or give a passing thought to things that I think are completely obvious and / or are important. There are a lot of people with ASD, dyspraxia, dyslexia in our families, I think there's probably a connection.

Theresnolimit · 13/12/2020 11:56

Coincidentally, I've often wondered of DH has ADHD. He seems to be either daydreaming/unaware/horizontal or being annoyingly loud and boisterous/tapping/banging/switching on every single light in the house.

My DH says he has very little memory of his childhood. I hope it's true - his mother was very abusive.

Danni91 · 13/12/2020 12:12

I've also got ADHD, OCD (nope not the cleaning typeGrin) and bipolar.

Maybe there is a connection after all. I've never really thought about it thats interesting though. I'm going to investigate.

Theresnolimit · 13/12/2020 15:59

I'd be interested to know your findings @danni91

I'm the same. I probably have inattentive ADD.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 13/12/2020 16:03

My DH is the same.

He played a lot of rugby. Did yours? I’m watching with current rugby/early dementia news with interest.

I don’t think my DH has dementia, but I do worry in case his brain has been addled by the game

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/12/2020 16:07

There is a connection between ADHD and bad or even no recall - there is even a medical term for this (which I can't recall - sorry).
It is also connected to head injuries and other medical conditions.
But for my family it is ADHD.

CorianderQueen · 13/12/2020 16:10

I'm 25 and I can barely remember my childhood. Anything before my parents divorce is very very vague. Isn't that normal?

MissMatchedClaws · 13/12/2020 17:42

There’s a thing about a type of memory deficit. It fits me, and like a pp I take loads of photos to try and manage it. Linky www.bbc.com/future/article/20181112-severely-deficient-autobiographical-memory-is-surprisi

IdblowJonSnow · 13/12/2020 17:48

Conversely I remember loads from my childhood, can even remember being in my cot.
But memories as an adult are very sketchy. I took some anti-depressants in my 20s and they absolutely killed my short term memory.
I take photos of everything for some reason as PP.

IdblowJonSnow · 13/12/2020 17:49

There does seem to be a massive range with what different people remember from different ages though.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 13/12/2020 18:43

Another thing for my DH is zero sense of direction.

My OH was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD. Doesn't remember being really young but does have some childhood memories. Appalling sense of direction. Also struggled with things like straps on car seats, putting peaks up and down etc no matter how many times he is shown
dontdisturbmenow · 14/12/2020 06:23

Interesting thread. I too have very sketchy and limited mormories from my childhood. Can't remember names of my close friends at the time let alone teachers. My oh can remember everything in detail, I find it spooky.

Oddly, I have been wondering in the last year whether I could have adhd. I show a number of signs. Never thought the two could be related.
