I had a baby 5 months ago and my hair is falling out by the bucketload.

Did anyone else have this?
Did it grow back?
I didb't have this with my ds.

I haven't posted about this as I was in denial but I am seriously worried now, it's falling out every time I wash it, all over the floors carpets.

I thought this inly happened to women a few weeks after birth.

Thank you.

I had this with both babies at around the 4 month mark. With dd it was really noticeable. I had my long hair cut up to a layered bob and it looked better. It did all grow back but my hiar is definitely thinner all over these days - either due to kids or age . It's quite common though after child birth to lose the hair you retained during pregnancy.

mishymoo · 22/10/2007 15:37

Yip - same here. I used to lose my hair in clumps around the 4/5 month mark! Apparently you produce 'extra' hair when you're pregnant and that is what is falling out now! Mine doesn't look any different (in thickness) now than it did 3.5 years ago. My DS is 2.3 years

This happened to me when I stopped bfing dd2 aged 18 months.

Half of my hair came out over 8 weeks. I had to get it cut shorter then I ever have done. Six months later, it has grown back totally.

Try not to worry.

I had it with both of my dses when I stopped bfeeding. My hair just came out in clumps - a brushful every time. It's completely fine now.

Megglevampire · 22/10/2007 15:40

Phew..thanks so much for the reassurance. Its also much greasier, needs washing every day now- used to be dry.

So I'm not sure about hairs lifespan but maybe it'll take about 6 months to get back to normal?

Megglevache - it will start growing back as soon as it falls out. I remember my hair being much greasier because I had so much less hair.

bagpuss · 22/10/2007 15:42

Yep, mine was so bad last time that I had bald patches at the front which eventually grew stubble . I haven't been able to put my hair into a ponytail for ages now and my hair is only getting back to normal now that ds2 is 2.

Megglevampire · 22/10/2007 15:45

Thank you.
I think I am worrying over it so much because my mother had such terrible hair loss due to (she says) being drastically anaemic (sp)following her last birth (my younger sister) and it never grew back. It's wonderfully thick everywhere but very noticably thin (you can see her scalp) at the front.

Yep, 4 months after the birth the hair on my head is falling out thick and fast.

Unlike the hair on my upper lip which seems to be compensating.

Megglevampire · 22/10/2007 15:46

whoah Bagpuss, stubble

I also had bald patches, but my hair didn't come back as studdle, it's come back very soft and just fits in with the rest of my hair.

belgo · 22/10/2007 15:49

stubble not studdle!

belgo · 22/10/2007 15:50

belgianbun - I also lost hair 4-6 months post baby, then again my I stopped bfing even though dd2 was 18 months.

Your hair loss probably is post baby.

bagpuss · 22/10/2007 15:52

I mixed fed for 6 months (largely bf with a top up of formula) with ds2. My hair was amazingly thick when pregnant however but didn't feel very thin when it fell out IYSWIM. There was hair everywhere though and I trashed several hairdriers with it being sucked up inside.

Meggle, even my MIL was shocked by my stubble when I showed her, but it was easily hidden as I have one length hair and a centre parting and it was just at the temples that was affected worst so I could tuck my hair behind my ears and it wasn't noticeable.
