Sudden alcohol intolerance?

Since July I've just not fancied a drink. This is pretty unheard of for me (apart from in pregnancy) as I've worked in bars my whole life and I am partial to a craft beer or an ale.

Tried some prosecco a few weeks ago and couldn't even finish one glass, made me feel ill the next day. Had a bottle of beer last night and had to get up in the night to be sick, I've felt rough all day from it. Even 1 drink leaves me feeling like I've drank 10 drinks the day after.

Any idea what could cause this? I'm definitely not pregnant as currently ttc and tracking.

I’ve heard this can happen with age. I’m 37 and have started to have similar in the last few months. My dh made me a very normal G & T a few months ago that gave me the worlds worst hangover and I may never live it down. One drink. My 20 year old self would be ashamed.

Theworkwitch · 13/12/2020 20:05

Also I guess through not drinking or an extended period you've got no tolerance whatsoever. This is what happens to me. Also age!

AbsintheFriends · 13/12/2020 20:05

I'm afraid I don't have any wisdom OP, but just wanted to say that this happened to a friend of mine a couple of years ago. Started quite suddenly, but after a period of significant stress. Since it began he's tested it out, and discovered that even the sherry in a helping of trifle is enough to make him throw up, and a sip of prosecco for a celebratory toast will make him ill for days.

He's been investigated for various things - nothing found. It's a complete mystery. I think in his case, he's (reluctantly) decided to accept it and hope that ultimately an alcohol free life will bring its own health benefits, even if he hasn't chosen it. There are an awful lot of really good alcohol free alternatives these days.

I’ve started to hit a wall with alcohol this last few years. Cant tolerate it well in larger amounts anymore at all without feeling ill the next day. I’ve put it down to age. I’m 41. I get anxiety and bad sleep after a few drinks and really feel the effects.

This year I’ve drank less as not been out and about like normal and I prefer being out to home drinking. I can have a couple but not really interested in much more despite still loving a glass of wine.

I’ve found i tolerate Prosecco/champagne or vodka, gin and spirits based cocktails better than wine though. So I’ve found a balance for when I do have a big night out I think!

Thanks everyone - I did wonder if it was age related, as thats the common theme with googling - but I'm only 33.

Something else weird is that I can't seem to tolerate caffeine anymore either! I wonder whats going on.

I wonder if it's hormonal? I didn't want to drink at all when I was pregnant and now I'm going through the menopause I don't want alcohol either. Most unlike me!

RoseMartha · 14/12/2020 19:02

I haven't been able to drink alcohol for at least ten years. Even if it is cooked in a dinner it will still make me ill.

It seems to run in my family that after a certain age we can not tolerate it at all.

I am intolerant to other foods and it is a nightmare if I go to a restaurant.

Sending a 🤗 because I know what its like.

RoseMartha · 14/12/2020 19:03

I have just seen your caffiene comment. Try decaff. I find that is better as I cant drink it either

dsaflausdhfiushdfakdsf · 14/12/2020 19:05

I'm experiencing something similar at the moment :s I usually unwind with a glass or two or cava/merlot and recently I've just not fancied it at all. It's actively unpleasant swallowing it.

I can see the positives for this, but the negative is that it was my way to relax! It's all very well saying 'find a new way! take up yoga! go jogging! do crochet! have you heard of CBT?' but alcohol is the thing that finally gets my anxiety and racing, repetitive thoughts to stop, and allows me to escape from the stresses of the day. I'm freaking out a bit of the thought that if I can't drink now, it's just me and my mind, 'on' all the time forever, apart from when I'm asleep. I do not want that.

OhDear2200 · 14/12/2020 19:09

This is me. Love a drink, but one or two drinks gives me a horrible head the next day. Almost migraine like.

I’m trying to find the ‘best’ drink for me. I don’t want to get sloshed but now and then just want to take the edge off!

OhDear2200 · 14/12/2020 19:11

@dsaflausdhfiushdfakdsf that’s what I sometimes need, not often but very occasionally it just is a quick way to quieten it all down.

Toastedsesame · 14/12/2020 21:32

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn This is what I'm wondering. It feels like the same sort of aversion I had in early pregnancy.

This happened to my husband around 10 years ago. He just avoids it. It means I barely drink too. I do sometimes miss being able to have a drink together.

VerbenaGirl · 14/12/2020 21:40

This has happened to me big time with the peri menopause :-(

Toastedsesame · 14/12/2020 21:42

@VerbenaGirl how old were you? I'm hoping its not peri yet, as we're ttc at the moment.

46 - so not unexpected.
