Basically not sure what to do with dd with temperature? She has had a cold/cough for nearly 4 weeks and since last night has had a temp as well. Phoned NHS direct this morning who ran through a list of possible symptoms that she didn't have - they said to keep her cool in light clothing and take her to the GP tomorrow if not better... She has been sleepy all morning (perhaps due to Calpol) and grizzles when i put her down so have had her in the sling all morning - not great for my back!

Apologies for stupid questions (this is the first time she has been ill) but

  • should I try to get her to eat and if so what? She hasn't shown much interest so far - one tiny piece of banana and a couple of tsps of yoghurt plus two short breastfeeds.
  • is it okay to take her out in the pushchair or should I be keeping her indoors?
  • should I just let her sleep as much as she likes (worried that her night-time sleep will go to pot)

Many thanks in advance

alternate between calpol and nurofen (so she is taking something every 2 hours)
if she needs to sleep, let her sleep - when babies are ill they need to rest to help them recover
fresh air is ok - wrap her up warm
keep an eye on her - if she gets worse then get straight to the GP (watch for rashes, spikes in temperature, floppy etc)
don't worry about food - offer her a breastfeed as and when and maybe some toast or a yoghurt

Calpol won't zonk her out unless she is otherwise sleeping poorly due to pain or congestion. Let her eat as much or little as she has appetite for but fluids including bm are more important. A walk mid afternoon when it is warmest could help, indoors it is probably very dry which wonlt help the cough so a humidifier or vaporiser may help especially at night. Also prop her bed onto a slope. Let her sleep as and when to get it out of her system. You can alternate Nurofen with Calpol or perhaps try Medised which has a decongestant. hth

All good advice except dosage of medication.
Give every 4 hours, certainly not every 2h!!!!

Also, there is no point going the full monty alternating calpol/nurofen if fever is reasonnable low/medium grade. What will you do if you need to up the stakes??? (hopefully not).
Let her sweat it out and give plenty fluids/breastfeeds and see GP as soon as you can.

In my experience, onset of fever after viral cold generally means secondary bacterial infection (ie:bronchitis/otitis etc...) but may well be just yet another bug passing by....
Only a doctor can tell.

I usually use medised rather than calpol because of the decongestant and mild sedative effect at night.

Take care ( and try and nap with her to get some rest)

you can alternate calpol and nurofen so you are giving something every 2 - 2.5 hours
GP has advised this in the past as they work differntly it is safe to combine them in this way
obviously keep within the dosage, for the age range of your DD

Thanks for your responses - will take her for a walk to the shops to get some nurofen and keep up the bfeeds - we had dropped to just morning and evening feeds a couple of weeks ago but I guess that my body will respond to the increased demand. Her temp (underarm) has gone down to 38.2 last time I checked (was 39.6 this morning) so heading in the right direction - she has slept quite a bit this morning.
