Any tips? I've been using Optrex all weekend but all it seems to do is gunge up the ear any more.

I hope you don't mean Optrex as it's meant for your eyes! Is it Otex that you've been using?

TwigorTreat · 22/10/2007 09:04

otex can also inflame your ear .. they say its best that you use a few drops of olive oil a couple of times a day .. but usually you have to do it for 2 - 3 weeks before they can syringe it

lucky you though .. I love examining the gunk that can come out of my ear (only done it once and she had to wrestle the tray off me)

MaureenMLove · 22/10/2007 09:06

Pardon?

Sorry, couldn't resist! Don't thik there's much more you can do really. The Otex is making it all soft, so it will make it easier to clear on Thursday. Have you had your ears syringed before?

dooley1 · 22/10/2007 09:13

oops sorry yes meant otex!
yes I've had this one ear syringed a few times now but not the other one wierdly.
Every time I go though the nurse frowns and says they are considering banning doing it and that it should just clear on it's own but it never does.

You have my sympathies - all of the ear wax remedies do exactly the same to my ears and just make the problem worse. Have you got an NHS Walk In Centre anywhere near you? I went to one last time mine was really bad and GP could only offer an appointment in a week's time. Had stereophonic hearing back within the hour!

MaureenMLove · 22/10/2007 09:17

I love having my ears syringed! Is that weird? Its just a lovely warm feeling and makes you feel really, really clean! I have had both mine done before and you don't realise how little you can hear, until you can! I can even hear my clothes move when I walk. Tis lovely!

dooley1 · 22/10/2007 09:18

yes strangely I too quite enjoy it
Just hate having to organise having it done and have to take time off work for something so unglamorous... also hate the being deaf in one ear thing...

You could try a hopi ear candle.

no funny remarks please but i have always done mine myself with the turkey baster!

fill with warm water then let it run from baster into ear. Leave for a minute the squeeze end of baster and having opp end in ear as far as you can let go of sqeeuzing end so it can suck whats in your ear might take couple of goes but works for me and feels nice also!

and my hearing is perfect!

I was deaf in one ear for about 3 weeks this summer following an infection. Doctor told me it didn't need syringing and would clear on its own eventually (eventually being the operative word). She suggested two things... sherbet lemons (apparently they increase saliva production and help to shift gunk from the eustachian tube ) and sudofed (opens up the tubes). I tried both, though I can't say they did a lot to help.

Lots of sympathy.

I am often deaf in one ear following a heavy cold - after endless visits for syringing the nurse advised me to use warm olive oil twice a day. As soon as I'm deaf I follow this advice and, although it does take a few days, then my ear "pops" and I can hear as clearly as ever - no need for syringing.
BTW you need to soften the gunk inside the ear before syringing, as otherwise it can be very painful (I once had a ear infection when my ear was syringed and that was sooooo painful!)
