lexcat · 21/10/2007 11:01

I believe this is what I have and have had for some years. The problem is in the winter I get numb white fingers and as the feeling comes back they are tingly. My problem is one of me fingers was affected last night, I didn't think any thing of it till this morning as I still have a small amount of tingly in the end. Never has it lasted more then a short time. Is this normal and is their any thing I can do?

you need to see your GP and maybe get referred to a vascular specialist. There are things you can do, and treatments.

belgo · 21/10/2007 11:07

and don't let your fingers get cold.

I'm sure there are other sites on the internet that can give you preventative tips.

BadKitten · 21/10/2007 12:37

lexcat - do you mean reynauds?
belgo - I didnt know you can get a referral for this. I get it, probably associated with my arthritis and it can be jolly uncomfortable sometimes. I also have blue hands and feet even when in a heated house. I thought it was something I just had to live with.

belgo · 21/10/2007 13:02

I've seen people with severe cases being treated in hospital. They may not refer mild cases.

lexcat · 21/10/2007 13:37

thank-you badkitten reynauds is what I meant.
Still got the tinging but have lovely warm hands due to wearing gloves all morning. Is it normal or not for the tinging to last so long as I have never tinging longer then a few minutes, just as the fingers warm up.

you can get medication for Raynaud's phenomenon

EachPeachPearMum · 21/10/2007 15:11

Dh has reynaud's. It has been much improved the past 3 or 4 years when we have been eating very healthy diets, little processed food, more fruits and veg etc (from ttc).
I think ginger is good for improving the circulation too.

I dont want to scare you but you must get this checked out straight away.

Go to the GP and tell him what you think and that you would like a referral to the hospital.

Do NOT let your fingers get cold and try and wear gloves as much as possible.

There are treatments but you must treat it seriously as this is not 'normal' ie we dont all get it IYSWIM.

morningpaper · 21/10/2007 15:43

I have had raynaud's for years

I'm not sure what collision thinks this is so bad thought TBH

You can get medication but generally it is pretty hardcore i.e. beta blockers which you don't really want to take all the time

I generally potter around in the winter with a hot water bottle and wear squillions of layers of clothes, warm vests and tights.

It's got better as I've got older - when I was younger I was occasionally stuck in town and not able to move because the pain was so intense - it was GRIM. Now I'm better at managing it and it's not so bad.

I never got it when I was pregnant!!!

morningpaper · 21/10/2007 15:44

The medication I have is adelat retard.

Some birth control pills can also affect it BTW.

belgo · 21/10/2007 17:20

Morningpaper- presumably you didn't get it during pregnancy due to your temperature rising slightly during pregnancy?

For a lot of people it is not much of a problem except for discomfort and pain.

For other people it can damage the circulation irrepairabley.

Blackduck · 21/10/2007 17:23

I suffer from it and know I musn't let my hands get cold or it is agony - you can give silver gloves that apparently help

BadKitten · 21/10/2007 19:41

I'm going to go back to my gp and chase mine up I think after doing some reading on it. I seem to have one permanently blue hand in this cold weather, I'm sure thats not quite right.

littlerach · 21/10/2007 19:44

my mum suffers with this, and has doen fo ryears.
She tries not to le ther hands het too cold, or they go blue and take ages ot go back to normal.

Magdelanian · 21/10/2007 22:17

I've had this for years but never worried about it or asked the doctor. Noticed it getting worse over time where half my hand can go white. I met someone that suffered from SRL?? or Raynards and he noticed and told me to get it checked. Perhaps I should?

robinpud · 21/10/2007 22:28

some people just have Raynauds and nothing else; some people have it as an indicator of an underlying circulatory disease like scleroderma so it is worth checking out if you are worried.

JoFan · 21/10/2007 22:34

i have reynauds - have always had it. even in pictures of me as a child i can be seen clutching my hands to try and keep them warm.

didn't have it in either pregnancy - bliss!

is reynard's when you smell a bit foxy?

lilacclaire · 21/10/2007 22:39

The night symptons suggests possible carpel tunnel syndrome and your daytime symptoms are suggestive of white finger or one of the other conditions mentioned.
Unfortunately they often go hand in hand.
There is no definitive test for white finger unfortunately, although i could ask you a load of questions about your symptoms

JoFan · 21/10/2007 22:46

hand in hand

hee hee

is carpel tunnel hereditary?

I get it pretty bad especially in my toes which can look like burns and are so bad I can't walk. Basically you can take medication or precautions. I opted for the precautions and live with the pain because the medication is pretty full on and if i remember he said it's basically medication that peopple with high blood pressure take. If you take it you need to be monitored by your doctor regularly.Basically do what you can to keep fingers and toes warm. some years I barely get any problems and then i'm stupid and wear my pretty shoes in winter and suffer! If i remember the first time i saw the specialist his trick to determine how bad it was was to squeeze the finger/toe so the blood drains out (goes white) and count how many seconds until all colour returns. maybe that was just for entertainment though...

knat · 22/10/2007 10:18

can children get reynaulds? My 4 yr old has very purple/blue hands and arms in winter and this morning they are like that but they dont feel cold?

katz · 22/10/2007 10:25

my dd2 (2) has this, but its linked to the skin conidtion she has, which means we hope she will grow out of this at the same time as she grows out of the skin condition. We have to keep her warm and she can only go in the swimming pool for a max of 20mins before her fingers turn white, and we don't let her outside without gloves now the weather is getting colder, although getting her to keep them on it difficult! She screams in pain after they have turned white which i so upsetting to watch as there is little do to to ease it.
