Large deep scratches on face - want to try to prevent scarring

Hi

My son was attacked by another child at school. I took him to A and E because he had been punched, kicked and had deep scratches on his face.

Can anyone recommend anything to help prevent scarring?

Doctor thought it "probably" would not scar but don't want to take the chance.

I've told him not to pick it and there is no sign of infection.

Thanks

M

How awful for your son. That's terrible. If you buy an aloe vera plant and snap part of the leaf off, the gel inside is magical on wounds! Also, haven't tried this but my dentist recommended arnica for teething pain and he said it's also fab for healing/ to lessen bruising. Think you can get it in tablet form from Boots. Hope this helps.

Arnica is more for bruising not so much for cuts. Calendula is the one that you want for cuts and lacerations - also good at getting wounds to heal and prevent sepsis and scarring. I would suggest getting the mother tincture and diluting in water (don't use neat, put 5-10 drops in mug of luke warm water) and bathe wound with cotton wool pad.
You can't get the tincture from boots or health food shops but Helios Homeopathic Pharmacy will dispense it for you - look at www.helios.co.uk.

Vitamin E oil applied to skin can help I think. Also Bio-Oil but its expensive.
Hope your little one feels better soon.

How shocking. Can't add anything to the advice but how awful for you both

I second the aloe vera gel idea, my sister gave me a snapped off leaf last week to put on a scald from a bowl of microwavable porridge I'd tipped on my chest. The scabbing went within 48 hours of using the aloe vera, and most of the underlying redness has faded too, I just have pink marks now which are rapidly fading. It's brilliant stuff.

Also, another great healer is comfrey, you grow it in the garden and forget about it, then when someone has hurt themselves you grab a couple of leaves, boil them in a little water until soft, then bung them on the booboo. You can even add the softened mashed up leaves to a pan of melted vaseline, then repot it and keep it in the fridge for a quick ointment to smear on bruises and bumps. It really is so fantastic, the pain/bruising goes overnight. In fact it's so good it's banned in some countries as it makes you heal so fast it can set broken bones wrongly. Its other name is knitbone.

Hi Everyone

Thanks very much I really appreciate it. My son seems not to be concerned about the attacks - there were three serious ones in June and two this week just gone.

We warned the school in June that our child was not safe with other child in school but school thought we were "hysterical".

When this latest attack happened I took him to A & E as the scratches are so deep. Thankfully, the staff at the hospital have taken it seriously and reported it officially.

I received a letter this morning from the hospital and they are following it up.

My ds is a very robust child but when this happened not one member of staff asked how he was.
