I had CP as a child (well mum is fairly certain I did) so am I right in thinking there's nothing to worry about as I'm pregnant? I'm 22 weeks.
Any hints or tips as well? Some are white and itchy but dd is more upset about 'having' chickenpox than suffering the effects of it (no temp etc- yet anyway) Spots appeared overnight- how long will they keep appearing for?
Am not looking forward to spending half term indoors

If you're not 100% sure if you've had it, please contact your midwife/GP and get a blood test to check your immunity immediately. If you're not immune you can then get a VZIG antibody injection, but it HAS to be administered within 72 hours of initial exposure to be effective.

My dd1 Had suspected chicken pox when I was 6 weeks pregnant with dd2. I was told that it is only a problem in the first trimester or near the end of pregnancy.

I called my GP and they consulted with the obstetician to work out a plan of action. A blood test was arranged that day and I got the results the next day. (It turned out I was immune even though to my families knowledge I had never had it)

Dd1 had cp when I was pg.
My friend's osn also had it when she was pg, and she hadn't had it so was jabbbed against it.

(ds1 had chickenpox when I was pregnant too, I wasn't immune and had to have the VZIG jab - was all very fraught at the time, but I didn't get it)

I'm sure I can remember having it as a child and my mum is fairly sure I did. I might ask my dad but there's probably less chance of him remembering! I've just had to go through all this for slapped cheek disease [sigh] and I wasn't immune but thankfully didn't catch it.
Dh is off for piriton and calamine lotion- the joys!

Dd wille be 4 soon so could try Eurax. I'm sure CL is pretty unpleasant so a ny alternatives would be better!

Actually, I'm sure I remember lying in bed picking CL off my arms- why would I have had it on me if not for CP??!! I must have been around 9 at the time.

Get the calamine cream rather than the lotion if you can - it's much easier to apply

ds had it when I was about same stage with dd. As I had it as a child gp said it was fine. They can always check your blood fo antibodies. Give spots at least 5 days to come and be non conatgious.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/10/2007 10:22

Hayls - I had cp when I was 26 weeks pg. It was pretty unpleasant but the hospital said it was 1st trimester and around delivery that it can be a problem. I was given anti-body injections to lessen the outbreak (didn't work as I was too far gone) and ds1 was fine.

Hope you avoid it but if you do get it get some antivirals asap.

Enjoy half term

ScaryScienceT · 20/10/2007 10:28

If you've had chicken pox and you are 22 weks pregnant, there is nothing to worry about.

The tricky time is if a new baby is exposed to CP, so unless you were close to your due date, it wouldn't affect you.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 20/10/2007 10:34

oh I can sympathise - DS1 got them when I was about 34/35 weeks pg (can't remember exactly what stage). I freaked and called the GP who asked if I'd had it (yes) and probably nothing to worry about as I was "still several weeks away from giving birth"......

Well of course no sooner has DS1's spots cleared up but DS2's spots appeared - his last spot crusted over on the 23th May and DS3 arrived the following day (talk about cutting it close) (my EDD was 5th June)

Thanks, most reassuring. Hopefully she won't get too much worse than this (sadly the few spots that are really big and itchy are on her 'bits' and she's already popped one- however she is quite happy, singing and dancing ahilt watching cbeebies so hopefully it won't be too bad
