When did you know that your child was asthmatic?

My ds is nearly 11 months, and has been given a salbutamol inhaler following 2 bouts of wheeziness in the last 2 weeks, always during a cold.

He'd never been wheezy until then.

Do you think it's likely to develop into full blown asthma, or is he too young to say.

What were your experiences?

It's too early to say - certainly that is what a doctor would tell you. A viral wheeze or wheeze at the tail end of colds is pretty common, and will not necessarily lead to asthma.

dd1 was getting wheezy at the same age and still does at age 3.11 after a virus, or in her case an allergic reaction too, but there has been no formal diagnosis of asthma, and I've not noticed for sure that she does get out of breath on exertion. She has been wheezy for the last 3 weeks as well.

The good thing is you have ventolin now to get through these bouts.

dd1 wheezed without being ill. she was under a year old. the wheezing wasnt linked to colds/illnesses. she has never 'formally' been diagnosed with asthma, but is now 7years old and has had several attacks and been hospitalised as well. she does have eczema and several allergies, she is a typical atopic child.

dd2 was diagnosed at age 4 when a cold wouldnt shift and she was coughing for over 2 weeks. i took her to the GP when i could feel her chest crackling. she has had a couple of wheexey episodes since then. she was never wheezey during colds when a baby, but did have a bad bout of brocholitis and chest infection at the same time when she was 4months old. also suffers from eczema.

dd3 currently shows no signs of asthma at 2.5, but i know she does aheva higher chance of devoloping it, so will keep an eye on her. she has eczema and allergies as well.

Ds1 had been prescribed an inhaler when he was around two (in the aftermath of croup) and had to use it after a few colds after that, but he grew out of it and he's definitely NOT asthmatic (whereas I am).

The reason they don't diagnose formerly until much older (around 7 or 8, I think) is because many other things masquerade with the same symptoms and are treated exactly the same way (but are much more likely to grow out of in a few years). However, once a child is old enough to be able to do the peak flow test, then they can diagnose it formerly.

At 2, after head lice treatment . He had a an asthma attack following treatment.
Up until that point he'd shown no signs at all.
Now, 7 years on he is on all sorts to keep it under control

my ds now 6 had his first asthma attack at 18 months, out of the blue in the middle of the night, really scary.
he has ventolin and responds really well, sometimes everyday and sometimes not sor a couple of weeks,
my doctor said if a child starts wheezing under 5 years they will usually grow out of it by the time they are 10.
fingers crossed.

We suspected from a few monsth old but of course it isn't diagnosed as aathma until later. She is 4 now and has her inhalers but thankfully doesn't have full blown asthma attacks. If she gets a cold it goes straight to her chest and she often needs steriod nebulizers in hospital. Her excercise level is lower than other children but it doesn't affect her too badly.

Ds1 showed no signs at all until he had his first asthma attack at around 2.5yrs old.

Ds2 was about 3yrs old when he started coughing a lot when running around. I took him to the GP but asthma wasn't diagnosed until he'd had two attacks.

Dd had bronchiolitis not long before her 1st birthday. The doctor said that it was likely that she too would end up being asthmatic. She's now 19mths old and seems to be prone to breathlessness and wheezing when she has a bad cold.
