How do you catch a cold

When the other members of your house don't have one and your WFH?
Have blocked ears, sore throat and just started with runny nose.
I've not been anywhere for about three/four weeks other than dog walks.

Food shopping? Also the other house members might have had one but been asymptomatic.

Very strange. Another dog walker sneezed in your direction? Postie has a cold and it came in on you post?

isitnextyearyet1 · 29/11/2020 19:29

Never thought of a cold being asymptomatic. Not been out shopping. Kept distanced from most dog walkers. Now I remember one of the DD's sneezed a couple of times last week but then no more but maybe that's how even though they sneezed no more.
I've had the heating on more than normal, could it be from that?

Same here and I live alone. It's so bad I went for a covid test. Sore throat, cough, sweating, sneezing

gamerchick · 29/11/2020 19:34

Colds are airborne though aren't they? You could breath it in or it could land on your eye, as well as picking it up on your hands.

You don't catch colds from getting cold or heating.

Vicks first defense is effective if you use it at the first signs. I've been impressed since I started using it. It's like a back and forth for a few days using it and then just doesn't take hold.

Queenpaws, I've not booked a test with not having a cough but did wonder if could be covid but no temp either.
Gamerchick, I spoke to sis today who mentioned something about heating drying out the air?
Will look to purchase Vicks defense. Thanks.
I would never have wondered how before but with covid I have a bit of anxiety.

Mine came back negative. I haven't left the house so I really don't know where it came from!

ItsDinah · 29/11/2020 20:11

The common cold virus can survive for around 24 hours on surfaces of packaging.

The NHS advise you wash your hands before and AFTER you unpack grocery shopping. The virus could also survive and pass on to you from mail.

Good to hear it wasn't covid. I'm going to monitor mine. Strange how we have colds but haven't really been anywhere.
Hope you feel better soon.

It might dry out the air but it can't create a cold virus.

It's handy to have in. Use at the very start of a cold during the day for a few days, It's fascinating stuff. It's not cheap though.

"You don't catch colds from getting cold"

If you are cold, you are more vulnerable to the virus though.

"It might dry out the air but it can't create a cold virus."

Maybe dry air can irritate the sinuses and that's what OP's sister was thinking about.
