Anyone here have a partial Denture? How long to get used to it?

I've had to have 3 teeth taken out, and a partial denture fitted to replace them (hopefully only for 6 months or so, until all is healed, then I can have a bridge fitted)

Now the anaesthetic has worn off, I feel like I've been belted in the gob, and then denture feels like huge brick, making me feel slightly sick.

Dentist says I'll not notice it within a week, but I'm feeling pretty depressed now, just about the idea as much as the discomft.

any kind words of comfort out there?

I have had a partial denture for over 60 years, since I was 11! Initially it was just two front teeth but now it is 4 front and 3 side. I honestly don't notice it. Even when I was a child I was so glad not to have a gap where teeth had to be removed that I don't remember more than initial discomfort.

Hi Clumsymum,
Did it get easier? I've just had a visible tooth removed yesterday & I'm feeling pretty down right now. And living off yoghurt .

Thymeout · 25/11/2017 14:19

I started with one front tooth and now have three. Your dentist is probably right. You will get used to it within a week. If you don't, he can adjust it. I've only had to use a fixative recently as my gumline is changing with age. I've had it for 15 years.

The only disadvantage for me is the cost. I could have a new one made, but I'd rather cope with the one I've got at the moment, than shell out £££.

Thats the same as me. It takes time to heal and is sore ' not as bad as tooth ache tho ' but you need to be realistic about the results... there never gonna be as good as real teeth.
All these adverts about biting an apple with adhisive..WOW if you believe this your in for a shock the best your gonna a get is a crusty cob.
I know a guy that lost his leg and has a prosthetic and he says it never feels the same but he has adapted .
Be patient and give it time but if it still hurts after 2 weeks something's not right .
Good luck

I’ve stumbled on this thread with a day to go before I have a visible tooth extracted and what I euphemistically call a ‘temporary tooth’ fitted (can’t bear the D word!). I am reassured and terrified in equal measure! Any updates from those who were experiencing problems when they first started using partial dentures?

Nicnacknoo2019 · 19/08/2019 17:25

So Iv Had another tooth out today on the side meaning iv got 2 teeth missing there now and a denture made but it's really big compared to my small 1 with the 1 tooth on, when I put it in its like I start panicking because I'm scared of it moving and choking onit, I'm really upset over it all, how am I going to manage like this, please help thanks

Wal520 · 15/09/2019 16:33

Early days feel like I will never get used to it ! Plus side if any lost 4 pounds, eating feels alwful and got to go to work tomorrow terrified people will notice also talking funny
Definitely saving for an implant 🙄

Carole57 · 28/09/2019 12:27

I had a partial denture 2 weeks ago for a bottom front tooth. I started with an immediate and then got the proper one a week later. The first week with the immediate was awful I was constantly worried it would fall out. I'm now getting used to it, I'm really happy with the way it looks and i can manage to eat my packed lunch at work ok. I use the ultra fixodent which I have to top up after lunch but I'm pretty ok with it really. Better than the rotten tooth that was there before. I can speak ok now. At the beginning I was talking with a lisp. However I am planning to get an implant later.

Marriedwife21 · 15/11/2019 18:48

@Carole57 how are you finding it now?
Iv had one of my bottom canine (eye tooth) out a few years ago and just never covered it up and nowni have to have the other bottom canine out and then thought of 2 gaps at the front has sent me into melt down, I have done nothing but cry daily over the thought of having a denture I cant shake this awful feeling. I have the week off work when I get it done but it's my works xmas party at the end of the week and I'm scared about going and also my sons 11th birthday and was supposed to be going for a meal, will it be a really chunky peice of denture for 2 teeth?

Carole57 · 15/11/2019 22:21

@Marriedwife21 I'm ok it's become a way of life for me now. I would rather not have it of course but I'm happy with the way it looks. Not one single person has noticed, I eat and speak perfectly well. It feels reasonably comfortable, after a couple of hot drinks and my lunch at work I have to go to the bathroom and top up the fixodent but that lasts until I get home. I don't wear it at home unless I've got visitors. I don't think it will be too chunky , mine is just a small piece of gum coloured plastic with a tooth attached that I slot in between my real teeth. I hope it works well for you. Good luck :)

Talkthirtytome · 16/11/2019 00:13

Was a 3 piece bridge offered to you? x

Carole57 · 16/11/2019 07:40

@Talkthirtytome no I didn't get offered a bridge. I'm hoping to have an implant eventually.

Talkthirtytome · 16/11/2019 21:16

@Carole57 implants are a very good but expensive option. They were are £1,500 each when I was dental nursing Sad

Carole57 · 16/11/2019 22:07

@Talkthirtytome Yes I know, I'm prepared for the cost, a friend of mine went to Budapest to get hers done, much cheaper, but I'd rather get it done here and know they are within reach if I need check ups etc . I'm busy saving Smile

Hi just got my partial dentures about an hour ago had a bridge in for years but it finally gave up.. only option was partial dentures or implants which at £6500 for two was deffo out of my budget , the denture feels loose is that normal? I really don't think I'm going to manage with this😱

Jellykat · 02/03/2020 21:41

Hi Brogie, i had to go back to my dentist after my first denture because it didnt fit right and i looked like a horse (top front teeth) .. I had a second denture made (no extra cost) which is still lovely and snug after a year, i dont even need to use Fixodent.. i cant eat certain foods which i think is more psychological, but i manage to get by.

It does take some getting used to, try the Fixodent, but if it still feels too loose, go back and talk to your dentist.
