Help for dh please - v. bad toothache - what combinations of painkillers can he take?

Looked in archives as I know this has come up before but can't find anything. We have no dentist (because there are no dentists!) and as it is a nerve dying emergency dentist won't treat (can't ger root canal treatment on emergency care). Por dh is in agony - what can he take to max out on pain relief?

alternate between paracetamol and ibuprofen
2 hours between each and keep dosed up
get some clove oil from the chemist as well

sounds very painful - your poor DH

do you have any teething gel? that may help a bit as it does have a numbing agent in it

loopylou6 · 19/10/2007 08:51

u are gonna have to pay to get it treated privately, yes the painkillers will help, but i had the same troiuble years ago only i was to scared to go to the dentist, i ended up surviving on painkillers and ended up with stomach ulcers, it really is worth paying for, sympathies to DH tis very painful.

Miaou · 19/10/2007 08:53

Paying is totally out of the question loopylou!! We are on benefits. We don't have a choice.

What about codeine? Can he take that too, anyone know?

squonk - good idea
Anbesol is brilliant

RubyShivers · 19/10/2007 08:54

coedine = yes but take instead of ibuprofen i think

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/10/2007 08:55

Can take codeine I think but be careful it's not co-codamol as that will double up his paracetamol.

Your poor dh - is there nowhere he can go? He must be in agony.

Miaou · 19/10/2007 09:02

Nope - well, he can get an emergency dentist appointment, but by the time he gets it the nerve will have died and the only option will be root canal treatment. I'm in the same position - I had a nerve that died about 6 weeks ago and was told I would have to "save up" for root canal treatment!! . Bear in mind that I have an 11 week old baby therefore qualify for free treatment - makes no difference . Makes me so mad. Nearest NHS dentist is over 100 miles away - that's not one with any places though. I would probably have to travel 200-300 miles to find an NHS dentists who would have room on their books for us.

Thanks for the advice - from experience I would say clove oil is more effective than teething gel so will get some of that too.

That's awful Miaou and I'm gobsmacked that you can't even get free treatment with a baby.

We've been so lucky to have kept an HNS dentist. When mine retired a couple of years ago dh's took us on (me + 3 kids) straight away. We've even had dd's orthodontist stuff done for free which apparently is a rarity these days. NHS dentistry is truly a crap state of affairs isn't it?

Miaou · 19/10/2007 09:16

Yup, dd2 needs orthodontic treatment (due to sucking her thumb, despite our best efforts ) and she is pretty unlikely to get it.

When my hubby had this he took Co-Codamol (codiene and Paracetamol) and put Clove oil on the actual tooth. You can buy it from Boots and it anaesthetises it for a while.

littleboo · 19/10/2007 09:44

get him to take, ibuprofen 400mg every 6-8 hours and in between cocodamol ( try and get some on prescription and it will be 30/500 ) thats every 4-6 hours.
Avoid hot and cold on that side, don't put anything on tooth
