i have just recieved an appointment for ds2 at manchester royal childrens hospital and i don't know why.

story is, ds2(8) , used to get ill loads and suffer from allergies. was given a blood test a few years ago at local hospital which showed some antibodies were lower levels than normal. so, low immune system.

as he never got any serious illness and was mostly o.k he had regular check ups but no treatment and was discharged 2 years ago.

recently i asked g.p to refer him back (to local hospital) just so he could have another allergy test as i wanted to know if he was still allergic to dogs (ds2 wanted a dog). he's had the test done and been told to come back to local hospital in 3 months.

now, i get this appointment for manchester royal and it's with dr arkwright who i think is something to do with immune disorders.

have they found something wrong? i thought he was fine . omg i am getting worried now.

skerrysmum, so i should worry ??

why would the consultant tell the gp of his ige levels but not mention going to royal manchester though? surely it would have said that that was the plan?

it's just an appointment out of the blue!

he is fairly pale, no dark circles though. bit skinny.
it's in the summer we really have trouble he has the worst hayfever i or the school have ever known. But, the best help with it we have ever been given is just the usual antihistamine, steroid nasal spray and eye drops.

none of this was the issue though when we went back to local hospital.

he was ill last week and now has a bit of a dodgy chest
but he has been swimming with school this morning (walking to and from baths) all day at school and then 1.5 hours karate and has done it all fine, surely thats not a ill child!

can't understand it. letter i got tonite was dated 17th october and appointment is 22nd october. now that worries me.

i know it is confusing!

originally his blood was tested for allergies and they must have tested for antibodies or i think they called them immunoglobulins? aswell.

of all the things he was tested for allergy wise only grass pollen and dogs was positive. so, i'm not too worried about that as the same results i think were found this time too.

the reason i think he had regular checks was that he had low levels of igM , igA and igG i think. he didn't produce as much antibodies in response to bacteria as normal.

but, i was told they weren't seriously low and as i say he was discharged about 3 years later.

i was only expecting this time for him to be allergy tested as that is what i had asked for. it seems they have checked out the other as well (the immunity thing)

i thought it would be allergy test, send me the results, job done. buy or not buy dog.

so, i have no idea why the doctor is going on about ige levels, dermagraphism and now a surprise appointment to another hospital / consultant.

i am scared that something bad showed up.

It might just be that under the choosing hospital thing, it's the only place/quickest place that has an appointment?

i phoned the hospital this morning. I could only get to speak with the secretary who looked at his notes and said that it looked to her that he had been referred to an immunologist because Dr smith suspected an immune deficiency.

i explained to her that that was old ground, that he had seen a member of their team for 3 years and had never been referred anywhere else, in fact was then discharged.

she said that there must be something he wants to check out but not to worry. Ha!

so, of course i am still worried. i guess Dr Arkwright the immunologist will shed furthur light on Monday. Dh has arranged the day off as i don't drive and it's a bit of a trek to Royal Manchester Hospital.

Thanx for asking
