I'm soooo guilty - DS2 has major cavities

DH usually brushes the boys teeth but I did them last night and he has big holes in his back teeth He's only just gone 4 so I'm terrified for him. I've asked dh to take him to the dentist next week as I'm so mortified. DS1 doesn't have anything wrong with his.

some kids get cavaties, some kids dont. my sister and broither have fillings, i have none. they didnt eat more sweets etc than me.

I'm thinking that way now as DS1 hasn't one at all. I was worrying he'd have to have injections but my mate says they coat them at that age. Hope so

I only have 1 filling, Misdee (my sis) has none, but our brother and sister have lots. We ate the same as kids.

ladymuck · 22/10/2004 12:30

My ds1 (age 3) had a hole, and yes they do just coat them - no fuss, done as part of normal check-up - not sure ds even realised. In and out in 5 minutes.

I did beat myself over it, but when I talked to the dentist this last visit (where he got a clean bill of health), was just told that sometimes the back teeth are very deep and tricky. I've continued to watch diet, but to be frank they're both good (and healthy) eaters anyway.

i was horrified when at age 6 tom had to have 6 teeth removed in hospital.

this had followed years of tortuous teeth brushing (arm locks etc) ...and now almost 5 years later the final adult tooth has filled the last gap.

i'm sure some teeth must be weeker as my 7 year old has not had to have any out....though has had a filling....and my 5 yr old has to date had no pain when eating/toothache

clary · 23/10/2004 00:15

JD my DS1 has had one tooth filled and needs another one certainly. He's 5. Dentist told me it's not my fault, just that the teeth weren't that well formed when I was pregnant - not a priority like heart, lungs etc - and I was perhaps ill or something.
Of course I was beating myself up, "I never gave him juice in a bottle, he had a cup only from age 1, no sweets as a rule" etc etc.
Please don't worry about it there's almost certainly nothing you could have done.

JuniperDewdrop · 24/10/2004 15:01

That's interesting clary as I was unwell in the last few months of pg. I ate healthily etc.. but his teeth haven't been very good from the start. They're small compared to DS1s too.

Thanks for the advice/support I'm not as stressed now

2 of my kids are cavity-free (12yo and 5yo), 2 have cavities (10yo and 7yo) and one hasn't seen the dentist yet. There is no noticeable difference in hygiene or diet. Fortunately, no one has cavities in their permanent teeth.

The dentist doesn't seem fazed by this, and the best thing we can do is religiously take them every 6 months.

paolosgirl · 24/10/2004 17:17

My ds has a filling as well - and he doesn't get the usual sweets, fizzy drinks etc. It can be down to their back teeth having deep fissures. Just to prepare you though - he did get a filling, no injection as it wasn't that deep, but it might be worth checking beforehand? Good luck!

kalex · 24/10/2004 18:43

Not exactly the same, but I was 28 when DS was born, never had a filing in my life, about 6 months later I had a filling, and I was gutted , and then 4 months after that I had to have root canal on the same tooth . The dentisat reckoned it was because I had given vital nutirnets to the baby and so I had become suseptible.

I would imagine that the reverse can also be true, if you are a bit under the weather, your baby makes sure all vitals are taken care of before worrying about teeth.

justmummy · 27/10/2004 16:10

I went through the same as you about 12 months ago. Felt sick with the guilt.
Ds has had a couple of fillings and thankfully it was nowhere near as bad as i thought it might be. I was imagining horrible injections and drilling, but the dentist just cleaned the area and filled it with a white substance (no idea what). Ds didn't flinch at all, was just like having a thorough check up.
Get him off to dentist asap.
I was also worried dentist would tell me off about not looking after his teeth, but she was fine. Probably seen alot worse than having to have a couple of fillings.

cheers all, dh is taking him next week.
