Hypochondriac dh has been asked to see the dr following blood and stool tests

Dh has had a 20 year long up and down history of IBS issues- diarrhea, cramps, etc. It has got worse in the last six months and he has got himself in a massive panic about it. I’ll be honest, when you spend your life with someone who constantly thinks they’re dying it ends up rubbing off on me somewhat.

So following stool and blood tests last week he got a message to make a drs appointment today and he is saying I knew it was something etc. I’m ending up fearing the worst as well as he is my whole world.

Was hoping someone could hold my hand

Good luck op. It may be nothing too serious. If it is then ask questions and just be there. Good luck.

Rationally, it could be for any reason. Most not sinister. Could be low on a vitamin, could be absolutely anything.
As a health anxiety sufferer I empathise with your DH ( and yourself). It's a living hell that you both go through daily when you suffer. It's relentless.
Keep us informed. Chances are it's nothing like what you're thinking- and if it is. It's best to know and get it sorted out.

If they had found cancer would they have asked to see him immediately rather than asking him to make a routine appointment?

Bumping as both very worried

If it's urgent then they tend to move pretty quickly - phone call the same day wouldn't be unusual
My dad had bloods done and they sent an ambulance, and the GP turned up at his door. Apparently his "bit of blood" caused by polyps he omitted to mention was so severe he needed two blood transfusions Hmm

I've had abnormal bloods and received a call the same day early evening

NanTheWiser · 16/11/2020 21:24

Blood and stool tests wouldn’t show cancer @Bunnyflop. They might show infection markers, which could be why he’s been contacted. There are various things it might be, which would require further investigation, so please don’t jump to the worst scenario just yet, it could be something quite minor.

Thank you. Hoping and praying we can get him in to speak to the dr tomorrow because his mind is going overtime bless him. It must be so awful to be so terrified all the time

When blood tests indicated my mum has ovarian cancer, she had a blood test one afternoon and the GP called her and told her at 7:30am the next morning.

It’s possible that they’ve picked up markers for coeliac, crohns, inflammatory bowel disease etc which might explain a long history of bowel issues.

Hang in there

PrincessBuggerPants · 16/11/2020 22:40

If it has gone on for 20 years it is probably domething like ulcerative colis, Crohn's or coeliac though?

Bunnyflop · 17/11/2020 06:52

@PrincessBuggerPants well yes that’s what my rational mind thinks. His dad had a colostomy bag but we can’t remember what for (he died of liver cancer 17 years ago, hence why dh is so afraid, and I swear the more he approaches his dads age the more frightened he gets).

@SinkGirl I’m sorry about your mum’s diagnosis.

It sounds like me when I got my crohns diagnosis. Stool and blood tests came back with elevated inflammatory markers so I was referred to a gastro consultant who arranged a colonoscopy and diagnosis. I’d had problems on and off for years and assumed IBS, then it got worse so I eventually hauled myself off to the gp. I hope you get some information soon.

Bunnyflop · 17/11/2020 07:25

How is it day to day @Montybojangles? He has had a couple of colonoscopies over the years but nothing showed up. Think the last one was 2015.

Sending positivity to your DH. I received a call from the dr regarding my faecle sample as I was packing the car to go away on holiday to USA. She referred me a week later under the 14 day pathway and I was seen just after returning from the worst holiday ever 😪
Fingers crossed it’s something that can put his mind at rest x x

notapizzaeater · 17/11/2020 07:59

Tbh if it was something dodgy our doctors would actively ring you not ask for an appointment.

SinkGirl · 17/11/2020 08:28

I should add I got a similar call once after some blood tests - I had a folate deficiency! Not sure why they needed to waste an appointment rather than just call me and tell me to take a supplement!

We also had a situation where DH and I were both called in to see the paediatrician after a load of test were done on DT2 but there was only one result outstanding, for a concerning condition. Obviously we assumed the worst - nope, that result wasn’t even back yet. She just wanted to talk to us both about an existing diagnosis. Given the way it all happened we were so certain it was that result.
