Do you get an ECG done at your GP's or at the hospital?

Over the past year or so I've been getting a pain in the left hand side of my chest when I am lying in bed, in the evening, before I go to sleep. It's odd because it feels like it's coming through my breast and almost culminating in my nipple. A couple of years ago I went to see my GP about this but he said I was too young (forties) to be at risk of heart disease, especially as a relatively fit and healthy woman.

However a couple of close male relatives in my family have died of heart issues so I'm still a bit concerned and would like to see if I can get an ECG. The thing is 1) I don't want to add to the local NHS workload at the moment for something that's not urgent and 2) I wouldn't want to go to a hospital now with all the risks related to Covid.

So I was wondering whether, if I really can't put this out of my mind, I could get an ECG done at my GP's practice. Any idea?

You should be able to get an ecg at your GP practice, I have before.

I've had an ecg in the last few months and it was at hospital in the cardiac department. They are in my local hospital trying to be as safe as possible and I felt pretty reassured there (hopefully that's still the case as I'm due back there tomorrow to have a loop recorder inserted!) 😉

I doubt a GP's would have the equipment.

They may of course have an ecg, but round here you would struggle to get to see GP in person.

CMOTDibbler · 16/11/2020 12:37

Our GP practice does them

titchy · 16/11/2020 12:38

Nurse does them at our GPs

Depends on the practice.

Some will do them, some won't.

Likewise, some GPs will interpret them, others will ask cardiologist to.

My last one was at a GP's office, although pre-pandemic.

Our practice doesn’t, it may depend on your area. Maybe start with a telephone appointment with your GP. Things may get crazy busy once COVID vaccination starts so I’d call sooner rather than later.

Thank you all. I will get in touch with my GP practice and see what they say.

GP practice here can do them.
