Ds, 9 months, has so much catarrh - how can I help?

Poor DS has had a cold for almost 2 weeks now, and it seems to be getting worse rather than better. His nose is constantly streaming and now he's developed so much catarrh that he is coughing on it frequently. This means that he throws up his meals on average once a day, which is pretty unpleasant for both of us! (this usually happens within 10 mins of eating).

I realise its just a cold, but wondering if theres anything I can do to help reduce the amount of catarrh and snot (tmi, sorry!) , and therby stop all this vomiting.

Any advice appreciated.

i always use medised - it can be used from 3 months and has an anti histimine so dries up all the snot. it also helps them sleep at night.

thanks furball, I have heard aabout medised but didnt know about the anti-histamine, will give it a try!

Hi The apprentice
Apparently dairy products add to the amount of mucus produced. Difficult to limit in a lo but might be worth considering if having loads of yogurts etc.

My ds was a bit like that and i had (still have to) moniter his dairy. I couldn't have too much when I was breastfeeding him either.

Interesting you say that about dairy as it had occured to me too. Hard because hes not that good with finger foods yet, and I rely on yoghurts, cheese sauces etc a great deal. but we've just had pasta bolognese, followed by first dose of medised, so we'll see how that goes.

thanks for helpful advice

Hi, your post could be about my DS - also 9 months. Cutting out his nightly yoghurt seems to have helped him not sick up whatever I manage to get into him (although one of the other symptoms of this never-ending cold is loss of appetite) and I second any good reviews on Medised, really helps him sleep at night.

dd is nearly 11 months, and just the same these past couple of weeks. She had the start of a chest infection in addition, which is now better, but snot continues

We've used Medised (but she often throws it up) and Karvol, and raising the head of the cot, but by FAR the most effective is using a good humidifier, with the steam (cool steam, not hot) aimed at the head of her cot. Ours is about 3 feet away max, and on intermittent (steam every 3 minutes for a minute) and makes all the difference to her sleep, and ours.

hth, dd has laryngomalacia, and is a noisy sleeper with narrow airways - so this subject is extra relevent to her

Thank you all, might look into the humidifier more, sounds good. Have to say, though, that sleeping has not been a problem for ds, nor has losing his appetite (he's like his father - will always eat and will sleep through anything!)
He had Medised again last night, is still streaming this morning though!
