DENTIST?

Praying one of you can help me! I have the biggest dental phobia in the world like it's extreme but my teeth are falling apart and I'm only young so I need to visit a dentist and get this sorted. I wanted to know if anyone could offer reassurance or fact to ease my fear? The biggest thing that's worrying me is I'm scared that when I have a tooth removed parts may break off and go to the back of my throat causing me to choke on them? Or the tooth will get to the back of my throat etc. Tia!

Just to add it's a tooth at the top of my mouth right at the back so seems like it could easily get to the back of my throat

It's extremely unlikely that a tooth would fall to your throat as the dentist will have a firm grip on it. I've heard of so many tooth removal stories from friends and family (and myself) and never ever once have I heard of this happening, so it's really not a thing to worry about.

To add extra reassurance though, if something were to fall to your throat like that you wouldn't just choke. Your natural reflexes would kick in, you would cough and your epiglottis would help to stop you from choking by covering your wind pipe.

I took have a phobia of the dentist so I know how awful it is. I fixate on something other than choking though and don't have this same worry!

When you have treatment at the dentist, the nurse uses a sort of sucker thing, so any bits of debris get whisked away immediately. If the dentist is extracting a tooth, he or she will have it gripped firmly with the tool.

If you are worried, you can ask the dentist to talk you through the procedure, and answer any questions. (Ask how many times this has happened - I bet they say none!)

www.dentalfearcentral.org/forum/

This is a good website if you have dental anxiety. There are certified dentists on there. Lots of questions lots of answers.

Worth a look

I have an awful fear and ended up being sedated at the dental hospital for work to be done.

georgieeb4 · 16/11/2020 01:53

That links brilliant thank you @fizzyp0p ! And @doublecheeseburgermediumfries tbh I think I'm more scared of being put to sleep than I am of the dentist. I'm glad you managed to get the work done though

I'm having my first tooth out tomorrow @georgieeb4 I'm very scared, it's a large double molar down the back, I'll let you know how it goes!

doublecheeseburgermediumfries · 16/11/2020 08:08

@georgieeb4 you're definitely not put to sleep!! Plus before you even have any work done you have an assessment. They talk to you about why you're scared of the dentist how it makes you feel etc.

They can give you just gas and air which goes over your nose and you're still completely aware or in my case intravenous sedation where I had cannula in my hand. I was completely awake for the whole procedures I just wasn't completely with it. I had 4 lots of work done overall and only one i have an ounce of a memory of. Plus in the room there is a dentist, a nurse and someone taking notes. I felt completely safe!

So if you don't get over your fear or still have anxiety I would ask to be referred to the dental hospital or in my case your dentist refer you with your consent because I can barely sit in the chair 😓

Good luck!
