Coeliac and sudden violent pain and vomiting. (Sorry)

I’ve been diagnosed for over 30years and even if I get accidentally glutened I tend to just suffer with diarrhoea and a bit of bloating. Last weekend suffered the most awful trapped wind under my ribs. I’d had it last month after gf pancakes. It went away. But last night after gf Fish fingers, chips peas and bread, I was absolutely doubled up, in fact dh wanted to take me to a and e, he thought it was a heart attack, white and clammy, etc.It wasn’t budging, no wind, no gurgling tummy. Then I went to the loo and had projectile vomiting.(sorry) I’m never sick. It was a bit better but took hours for it to go away properly. I feel wonky and weak today, but stomach ok.
Only thing I’ve had different (and I’ve had it before) was warburtons gf tiger bread.
Has anyone else had problems like this? Can coeliac change in its presentation?

no, but there was a case on Dr G Medical examiner, (tv show) a few weeks ago, and the person died, because they assumed their pain was related to their IBS but it wasn't.

Could it be gallstones?

milkjetmum · 14/11/2020 17:26

Was about to say that was more or less how my first gallstones attack presented. Low fat eating will give some relief but ultimately gallbladder usually has to go. In the meantime buscopan and as much painkillers as gp will give you. You can probably get co-codamol from pharmacy while you wait to be seen.

murmurgam · 14/11/2020 17:27

Gallstones would be my guess based on those symptoms after a meal of chips and fishfingers.

Are you in your forties?

CharityPecksniff · 14/11/2020 17:28

Poor you. Is it possibly you have developed an intolerance to xanthan gum? It gives me the symptoms you describe.

Motnight · 14/11/2020 17:29

Sounds like gallstones to me too, Op. Worst pain ever.

ballsdeep · 14/11/2020 17:32

I am currently in bed with an horrendous gallstone episode. It's lasted a few days. Nothing will shift it. The gp has given me antibiotics but I'm not holding out much hope! You have my sympathy it's torture

Despite being a chunk, we don’t have a high fat diet. The fish fingers were oven cooked, and I’d gone off the chips after two or three. Is gall stones high up? This was behind my ribs.
Co codamol doesnt do a thing for me.
I associated it with the bread as I rarely have that one and it felt like I’d eaten too much of it, if that makes sense Been drinking peppermint tea all day.
I remember my df driving himself to hospital in the middle of the night and being rushed into surgery for gall bladder removal. ( it was the 70s and we didn’t have a phone and not in uk)

Yes, gallstone pain is normally high up at the bottom of your ribs

Risk factors for gall stones are

Fair
Forty
Fertile
Female
Fat

murmurgam · 14/11/2020 18:32

Oh, and i think they sometimes say Family as well so if your Dad has had his gall bladder removed that increases your risk

My mum has 5 brothers and 2 sisters and none still have their gall bladders, which is where my limited knowledge comes from.

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 14/11/2020 18:40

Not personally (I avoid wheat because it aggravates my IBS but I’m not coeliac) but I noticed some people on the Gluten Free and Me Facebook page have said they’ve reacted to that Tiger bread so it could be that.

Three out of five.

The other coeliac teacher at school can’t eat it, or oats. I’m fine with gf oats.
Thanks for everyone’s input, sounds like a doctor call Monday. Know exactly what the first thing they will say...(which I know 😪)

For what it's worth, i had one bad (not quite as bad as you're describing, but going to A&E did cross my mind) and a couple of milder episodes last year. Saw the GP and was referred for an ultrasound but it was delayed and I ended up cancelling it because I'd had no more episodes. (also because I needed to travel overseas)

Fingers crossed this proves to be a one-off for you.

Pythonesque · 14/11/2020 20:57

Oh, and about avoiding fatty food - the gall bladder stores bile which helps in the digestion of fats. When you eat a meal, even a small amount of fat in it stimulates the gall bladder to contract, so if their are stones getting in the way that's when you get pain. Sometimes people need to got on extremely low fat diets to manage symptoms prior to gall bladder removal.

I’ve been reading up about gallbladder disease lately as I’ve been experiencing increased frequency & duration of attacks.

I did see something which suggested a link between gluten intolerance/coeliac disease.
