Please help-urgent help needed with my Dad. I posted on a thread before about dementia and Altzheimers etc but he is now really scaring me, being dillusional and paranoid. If you can help, but don't want to give out your MN name, could you just change it for me, please, just this once and change back? Many thanks, I really am scared and it's my Ds no 4 birthday tomorrow and I can't look forward to it now.

What help do you need? I have been in this position with my mother. What do you need to know?

Tiggiwinkle · 21/10/2004 20:35

You should call your dads GP. He or she can arrange for your dad to be assessed by a psychogeriatrician if necessary.(specialisr in mental health in the elderly)

Agree with Tiggiwinkle 100%. the assessment can take place at home. This happened with my mother. This is very hard to cope with but see your dad's GP asap. It is in his best interest, even if he doesn't understand this.

The others are right:
You must contact your GP who will refer your father to a Community Mental health Team. This may take a few days but if you are persistant you can speed things up. A Social worker will assess his situation and draw up a care plan for him. You dont need to suffer it can be dealt with. Look up 'Older peoples community mental health teams' for your area on Google.

I used to work in an elderly mental health team and agree with the advice to call the gp - as soon as you need to, if you're scared. I'm sure there are local support services too...?alzheimers society? but maybe not 24 hours. GP can arrange a cmht assessment and advise you of the best way to proceed. Really hope you're OK x Do you want to ask/say anyhting more about it?
