Is this Tinnitus?

For around 6 months I have heard a loud, low hum. I don’t notice whe I’m busy or there is sound but I hear it at night or when quiet at home. At first I thought it was ‘the hum’ people talk about bit now wondering if it’s tinnitus.

It is very intrusive and tbh I am getting quite stressed with it. I can’t enjoy the quiet and need back noise to cover it up.

Anyone know anything about this?

Go to your gp, there are tinnitus clinics running and they really do help.

I've recently developed tinnitus due to an issue with my jaw. Unfortunately mine is the high pitched variety so very hard to cover up. No advice I'm afraid but I know how stressed you are feeling. Every day is a struggle at the moment. GP gave me a leaflet.....

Sorry to hear that.

I looked at some websites that have Sound files with the most common tinnitus sounds. Nine sound like mine! Mine is like a large diesel lorry idling. Low sounding.

Maybe isn’t in my head??

I developed tinnitus about 2 and a half years ago and mine is also low hum, like a freezer or something only louder. I have it in just one ear so I had an mri to check it out and there was no underlying cause. I had some tinnitus counselling and it was very, very helpful to me.

I think mine is in both ears.

@Temporarything you've just described the sound I have in my right ear. I thought it was 'the hum' too but it clearly isn't.

Temporarything · 11/11/2020 22:55

I suppose I had better get it checked out.

To be honest I felt a bit silly going to the gp with it. The first one I saw basically said that there was no infection and it would probably clear up, when it didn't and was only in one ear they took it fairly seriously, I had a hearing test, the mri etc. Once any underlying factors had been ruled out the only real course of action was the counselling and I was a bit sceptical at first but it was really good. I'm not sure what will be going ahead at the moment though?

Pretty much nothing is going ahead at the moment unless you want to pay and go privately. I was offered an ENT appointment for May.
