I would welcome any help. My dd developed tonsillitis three weeks ago. She has a history of it. However time it has really knocked her. She has been on a succession of antibiotics and she has just started her third course but can’t keep either the antibiotics or paracetamol down nor water today. She has been sick five times in the last three hours. I’ve called 111and am expecting a call back within six hours. Is there anything I can do for her in the meantime?

Poor girl. Jellies/lollies.

She may need an antiemetic and IV antibiotics. My children start vomiting when ill like this and both have been admitted for treatment when the vomiting got out of control.

lissie123 · 10/11/2020 20:54

Thank you @Mollscroll. I fear it may come to IV antibiotics. I am so worried about her. Lollies a good idea.

Poor her. When I get like this, my really helpful GP informs me that I’m toxic and last time I ended up developing an abscess. Iv antibiotics and IV paracetamol will really knock it on the head and help her to feel better. Wishing her well - it’s bloody miserable feeling like that.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/11/2020 21:32

Can they take them out for her? Dan had hers done.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/11/2020 21:32

Dn. ffs.

Foxinthechickencoop · 10/11/2020 21:34

This used to happen to me about once a year. In the end I used to present at A&E when I cousin the keep fluids or antibiotics down. And a night on IV antibiotics usually sorted me out. It does make you feel absolutely rotten though. Your poor DD.

Foxinthechickencoop · 10/11/2020 21:35

Couldn’t (not cousin )

elaeocarpus · 10/11/2020 21:36

Ice to suck, icecream etc

Cold will help numb pain, and get some fluid in

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 10/11/2020 21:37

Sorry, six hours? Is that a typo OP? That's a really long time when she's so sick.

mummymayhem18 · 10/11/2020 21:38

The poor girl must feel miserable 😢. I hope you get a call back soon. It does sound like she needs IV antibiotics.

Sooverthemill · 10/11/2020 21:40

@Fluffycloudland77 current guidelines are really strict for tonsillectomy :
Sore throats are due to acute tonsillitis.
The episodes of sore throat are disabling and prevent normal functioning.
Seven or more well-documented, clinically significant, adequately treated sore throats in the preceding year; or
Five or more such episodes in each of the preceding two years; or
Three or more such episodes in each of the preceding three years.

DD is going to have hers removed privately by laser as haemorrhage is so common and so dangerous

@lissie123 I'm so sorry. My DD has had many admissions for vomiting when unwell nearly always a few days for IV fluids and / antibiotics. I hope your DD recovers soon, it is very scary

lissie123 · 10/11/2020 23:41

We are now in hospital. She is being admitted and is Going to be hooked up to iv antibiotics and will stay in overnight.

Good news about admission. One of mine used to get like this with his tonsils as a preschooler - we had them removed in the end because we ended up in a&e a few times for additional treatment.

Mollscroll · 11/11/2020 06:59

Oh I’m glad. That’s the right thing to happen. Poor love - she must feel awful. I remember with DD once it was one or two nights inpatient and then a week as an outpatient for more IV antibiotics.

I had a lot of tonsillitis as a child and the recurring bouts in my 30s till I had them removed. So debilitating and painful. Hope she’s feeling better soon and you get some sleep.

Sooverthemill · 11/11/2020 08:26

I hope she recovers quickly, IV drugs work fast. Look after yourself too

lissie123 · 11/11/2020 08:39

Thank you everyone for your support. I barely slept last night. I didn’t realise how ill she was. Visiting her this morning with all the forgotten phone chargers toothbrush etc.

Hope she's better soon OP, and that you get some rest.

Sooverthemill · 11/11/2020 09:41

@lissie123 don't beat yourself up. You did your best. She's in the right place now.

BertiesLanding · 11/11/2020 09:48

When I was in my mid-20s, I had tonsillitis every month for over a year - one of the bouts resulting in my having a temperature of 40 and my doctor wanting to admit me (I refused and instead lay in a bath of ice - not recommended at all, I hasten to add).

I ended up having my tonsils out at age 26. There was no other way: I was constantly on antibiotics and each bout was getting worse.

I hope you find the best course of treatment for your daughter, whether that's a tonsillectomy or some other approach. It's awful and I feel for her, and for you.

Flamingolingo · 11/11/2020 19:19

How is your DD @lissie123?

lissie123 · 14/11/2020 19:12

Hi
Much better. It was very traumatic when she was being admitted as she had a faintng fit which looked like a seizure. The nurses looked horrified and pressed an alarm and a whole load of medics piled into the room. I nearly fainted at what I saw. My DD cried afterwards and said “ mummy in not very well am I?” ( she never says mummy now she’s 19!). Even though the ward was Covid secure they let me and my DH stay most of the night with her as she was so poorly. But she has now been discharged and is home and recovering thank goodness!!

Oh what a horrible experience. So glad she is on the mend. Thanks for letting us know how she is getting on.
