Anyone else get ill after having a massage??

for the past 5 weeks I have been doing a massage course on a wednesday evening. Every Thursday I get up with headache that leads into migraine. This week we are doing a full body massage and i'm dreading it as every week its only been a small massage and i've been ill so what am I gonna be like this week?? Course tutor says it to do with the toxins that your body releases when your are massaged. I really want to go on to do the accredited course to be a massage therapist and dont want the thought of being massaged to put me off.

Any ideas how I can stop this happening in future.???

Thanks

What oils are you using? Are you sure it's not more to do with that than the massage itself?

GreatHauntieWurly · 16/10/2007 18:12

have been using sweet almond oil, which is very light

I have had a few thai massages and been absolutely knackered and drained afterwards - the first time with a tension headache that I think was tired-related.

Sorry, I don't know what to suggest.

think I will just drink plenty of fluids and say clear of caffeine til after its been done.

Hmmm, thought you might have been using something stronger, but you're right almond oil is very light. I'm not trained myself, just trying to think from the massages that I've been to and I have to say that i have never suffered from headcahes before. Your course tutor obviously knows more but are you sure there isn't anything else that you do or use on a wednesday that might be linked?

GHW,
Are you drinking enough? Having a massage is very dehydrating - and doing them is even more so.

I trained as a massage therapist a while back and I remember someone else on the course having the same problem as you.

It is quite stressful learning to massage and then being massaged: not only are you concentrating on doing it right yourself (and working loads of muscles as you do it), you are being used for practice by someone who probably hasn't got it quite right yet.

Hang in there. it's worth it!

you could try grapeseed oil - it is not unheard of for almond oil to disagree with some people. (I am a trained massabe therapist BTW) but also agree about the stress factor and the need to drink loads of water.

tbh, have tried grapeseed and find it too oily (if that makes sense).

I really want to stick at it, we only enrolled cos we thought it would be laugh and something different, but I am so enjoying it, and cant wait til ds2 is at school full-time so that I can study properly.

think it probably is stress related as I do find it very hard to relax and un-wind.

If its tension related my Pilates instructor gave me a good tip (as I was frequently getting headaches the day after a Pilates class) -try holding your tongue to the roof of your mouth as it stops you from clenching your jaw and causing tension around your head and shoulders.

is your head/neck comfortably positioned on the couch?

orangehead · 16/10/2007 23:30

When you have been massaged you should drink plenty of water to help flush out the toxins, otherwise you can be left with a headache

orangehead · 16/10/2007 23:31

Im very surprised they not told you that on the course we were constantly told it
