CT scan with contrast dye.. reaction??

Anyone had one and think they got a allergic reaction to the dye?
I had it done on Monday and on Tuesday I had a hive rash and itching on my wrists which subsided after a hour or two.
I was fine yesterday then this morning I started getting very itchy soles of the get and slight burning, top of foot itchy and palms of hands very itchy and burning, wrist the same.
Went away after a hour or two and came back again 5pm today and only easing off calming down now so anyone else get this?
Anything I can put on the itch?

Have you taken any antihistamines for this?

FatGirlShrinking · 05/11/2020 20:04

Any idea what the contrast dye was?

I had several tests using injected Fluorescein which always made me violently sick.

If you have it take some Benadryl or piriton as long as there are no health conditions that would stop you.

MrsTwitcher · 05/11/2020 20:25

I had hives after a ct and the hospital made me stay for a few hours to be monitored especially my blood pressure and I was given piriton. Its on my notes now which is really important.

kissmelittleass · 05/11/2020 20:59

I don't have anything in house to take and can't get out now, it's starting up a bit again actually really not nice and irritating!
@FatGirlShrinking I don't have any idea what they used other than saying we are injecting a contrast dye?
I'm presuming this is what I've reacted to as I read it when I was reading up about CT scans

Often use iodine for CT contrast, which you can be allergic too. Use anti histamine. When you get your results you must tell them so you can clarify and ask allergy is added to your records for future scans.

BloomedAgain · 05/11/2020 21:10

Oh I had this. I had hives all over my neck. The allergy is not on my notes though. I hope they can trace what they used and update my notes.

Uachtar · 05/11/2020 21:19

Hi Op. just want to say you should raise this with your medical team. My mum has a reaction to the contrast dye- fluoroscene I think it is called? And a very similar reaction so whenever she is in hospital I have to inform them of the allergy.

kissmelittleass · 05/11/2020 21:34

@BloomedAgain what did you do? How long did it take go away? Did you take anything? Thanks for replying
@Uachtar that's interesting funny how it didn't happen Monday the day I had it and I wouldn't of connected it with the dye only for I remembered reading it beforehand.
What did your mum do did she take anything the first time of did you away on it's own?

I'm not in UK so different system to the NHS - we buy our dye/drugs from the local pharmacy prior to the CT. For info if we are prescribed a contrast dye such as Imoeron we'll probably also get issued a prescription for antihistamine and a steroid in some form, so it appears there is potential for some reaction in some people.

Hope you get well soon...

kissmelittleass · 05/11/2020 21:36

@notimagain Thank you!

Do you have any medical conditions or are on any other tablets. I would probably seek medical advice as it might be a delayed reaction. The ct dept would know what they gave you. Mine came up pretty much immediately.

Uachtar · 06/11/2020 07:17

It happened a few years ago now so It could have been the next day but it was soon enough her team figured out that it was the dye. She has been admitted a few times since then with various issues, and on occasions she just had to forgo a ct scan but the the last visit was too serious so I think they gave her steroids and the dye and she was fine - no reaction

Itonlytakesone · 06/11/2020 07:27

I'm booked in to have a ct colonoscopy with dye, any recommendations on what to buy/have in the house incase of an allergic reaction. I'm so glad I read this as I had no idea this was a possibility😕

Misterectomy · 06/11/2020 20:54

Sorry to read about your bad experiences, PPs. I had one done today with iodine and felt very lightheaded and shaky afterwards. I was going to drive home but felt I needed to recover myself a bit before doing so, and went back into clinic. I was also really tearful. Turned out my blood pressure had got very high - 210/135. It gradually came down a bit but is still on the high side. Anyone had this kind of experience?

Level75 · 06/11/2020 20:56

My DH vomited in the machine and ended up being transferred to A&E, so yes you can get an allergic reaction to the dye!

kissmelittleass · 06/11/2020 21:37

@Misterectomy not high blood pressure but my heart rate was very fast last night and some of today I saw doctor and it was going from 101-118bpm.
He told me to take piriton but you have to be careful with antihistamine if you have a under active or over active thyroid, mine is under active.
The tablet seems to have stopped the itching and burning but was starting to come back this evening just before I took the second piriton and thankfully feel ok now but I do feel as if my heart is going slightly fast again.
Seems it's a nasty thing this contrast dye, my doctor didn't seem convinced it was the dye but I'd say it was!

I had hives following contrast dye. I now have this highlight on my doctors records, they said next time I would have contrast potentially I could have anaphylactic shock. Get it added to yours.

Misterectomy · 06/11/2020 22:42

@kissmelittle That’s interesting to hear. The medics I’ve seen today seemed to think it was unlikely to be the dye. Seems odd, given that I am normally fit and well. You too?

kissmelittleass · 06/11/2020 22:50

@Misterectomy I have a few minor health things but nothing major and am generally well and fit, how do you feel now?
@Oct18mummy as my doctor is not convinced in fact he really did not want to listen he talked over me so I'd say it would be unlikely to be added to my notes as he obviously didn't agree!
I will make a note though and if I was ever to be referred for one again I would mention it before hand.

OP posts:
Misterectomy · 07/11/2020 07:50

@kissmelittleass Yes, you should definitely mention it again if you ever need to be scanned again. I’ve read that the dye is really helpful but not essential, in any case.

I’m still feeling shaky and a bit freaked out! The resident doctor at the clinic where I had my scan seemed quite panicked by my bp. He wouldn’t let my partner in to see me and I heard him saying to someone “I can’t come right now, I’m dealing with a medical emergency”. He told me to go straight to A&E, which I did. The dr there said it might have been a reaction but also told me to see GP on Monday to check my bp and see if medication will be needed.

I only went in for a fancy photograph!!

Animum2 · 07/11/2020 11:04

I had a Ct scan recently and the dye was put in halfway through the scan, it made my heart race for a minute and was fine after that but I felt like i was a bit tipsy on the way home and had a massive headache

Itonlytakesone · 10/12/2020 21:09

Iv got a ct colonoscopy scan with contrast on Thursday I'm a bit nervous after reading this but also preparing myself by making sure I'm not on my own that night with my baby and getting piriton tablets in. Also think I'll be on my period too can't find an answer anywhere to check is this ok?Confused

Misterectomy · 10/12/2020 22:26

Don’t worry Itonlytakesone! I think most people have no problems at all. At least you now know the kind of reactions that are possible. Just make sure you stay in the hospital for say half an hour and that you are feeling fine. Fingers crossed.

Itonlytakesone · 10/12/2020 22:32

@Misterectomy

Thankyou oh I hope so! Well I'll post an update after Iv had it, on here incase anyone else finds this post Smile
